If you are the mother or father of a high school athlete here in Tennessee, this message is primarily for you.

We're always interested in hearing about news in our community. Let us know what's going on!

I don't usually do a personal article every week; however, when something happens within the sports world that is as atrocious as the St. Louis Rams leaving Missouri and heading back to L.A., I've got to chime in.

It really is hard to believe that another regular season of college football has come and gone. I guess there is something to the adage that time goes by faster as we age. If that’s true then a new season will start sometime next week for me.

Unfortunately, football season is winding down for the 2015 season. The CCHS Jets and SMHS Panthers both saw playoff berths; the Vols finished 8-4 and are awaiting a bowl bid, and the Titans continue to sink into obscurity with five games remaining in the season.

This regular season has really flown by and so has the renewal of my writing career. Again my Commodores have failed to gain bowl status so my season is somewhat shortened. Still, it has been a real pleasure espousing the talents and virtues of the Vanderbilt gridders. Really the victories a…

And another team not named Austin Peay or MTSU goes down at the hands of Vanderbilt and their stingy defense. The streak may end this week against Texas A&M but the defense has put together several games of pure stinginess. In years past a game like the Kentucky contest would have ended …

There was a time not too long ago that a close loss to a highly ranked team like the Florida Gators would have made the Commodores and their followers proud. That all changed when James Franklin came to Nashville and was able to convince the players out on West End Avenue that they were supp…

It was a tough Saturday evening for us Commodore fans and it makes it worse that I thought we would come away with a big win. The only positive about the loss to Houston is that the defense continues to play really well. Yes the Cougars put up 34 points but 21 of those were off turnovers, on…

No matter if you support the Cumberland County Jets, the Stone Memorial Panthers or both, game attendance is very important for each school on Friday.

The noise regarding the Titans’ ownership (or lack of) is increasing with each loss and it is only October. As I went back and read some old news surrounding some of the events that took place in the spring, I found a lot of notable bits of information that led me to believe that a sale coul…

Is it me or has the National Football League lost its luster over the years? That being said, the NFL still grosses upwards of nine billion dollars per year so somebody out there is still watching, but something feels different.

Yes, Vanderbilt lost another one that they very well could have won. All it’s gonna take is for the offense to play just a little and hold on to the ball. Really it is not the entire offense just quarterback Johnny McCrary. Though I respect him as a quality young man and student three interc…

With Vanderbilt having an open date I decided that I was going to watch Tennessee take on Georgia in a big SEC showdown. After about a quarter of watching Butch Jones follow the officials up and down the field whining in their ears I decided to just take a drive through the beautiful country…

First off, I would like to thank you all for your support in my new endeavour as your sportswriter for the Crossville Chronicle. All of your feedback and suggestions have been beneficial in making your sports section a better read.

Five games into the football season and there are very few things that we know for sure except for the fact that Butch Jones is finding out just how fickle Tennessee fans can be. He must understand that the consensus among those who adore orange is that he’s been there long enough to win them all.

I'm not talking about the close loss that the Volunteers suffered in the 'swamp' but rather what could have been one of the largest upsets in SEC history in Oxford, MS. Yes, I'm aware that the Rebels managed a 27-16 win on their home turf but this one could have easily gone the other way. If…

We all probably need cupcake games and that probably goes double for my Commodores but this past weekend's games for Vandy and the Volunteers were terrible for us watchers. Certainly I enjoyed the win and Frank Gale has already let me know that there may not be any more victories for my team…

Sure, it was very disappointing that Tennessee came up short in double overtime last Saturday against a higher ranked team; one that has not been rebuilding from the ground up - I might add. It hurt more than most losses but this season is full of opportunities to make the Oklahoma game a ba…

Yes, Vanderbilt lost another game, this one to a highly favored bunch of Bulldogs from Georgia. Unlike those fans clad in orange, I can take some good things from this loss. The final score of 31-14 was truly not indicative of the closeness of the game. Mistakes in the red zone continue to p…

After three weeks of action, the Stone Memorial Panthers football team remains the only unbeaten team in Region 3-4A with a 3-0 overall mark and a 1-0, followed by East Hamilton (2-1, 1-0), Livingston (1-2, 1-0), CCHS (1-1, 0-0), Hixson (0-3, 0-1) and Chattanooga Central (0-3, 0-1).

Being the "glass half full" type of person that I am I must look at the positive aspects of the Vanderbilt loss to Western Kentucky first. The defense, that is now coached by Derek Mason, looked to be much improved over last year. They held a very high-powered Hilltopper offense to only 14 p…

The 59-30 victory over Bowling Green last Saturday in Nashville certainly was a great start to the 2015 season. However, the quality of the competition increases tremendously when #17  Oklahoma makes a house call to Rocky Top tomorrow. We should know more about Team 119 by Sunday.

I know that it has been several months and a lot has happened in the sports world since we last discussed Vanderbilt and Tennessee football. But now that the time is here again, it seems like only yesterday. I'm ready to get this season started and I'm relatively sure that my counterpart Fra…

The Big Orange Nation is primed and ready for tomorrow's game in Nashville. All the hype will now be replaced by reality on the gridiron this fall. Speculation has kept us entertained with the varying opinions discussed throughout Volunteer Land but it is now time for the action between the …

The 2015 football season kicked off with a bang last Friday night, as both the CCHS Jets and SMHS Panthers notched opening night victories. CCHS beat Oliver Springs 28-14, while SMHS defeated York Institute 54-18.

The Vols made an appearance in the AP's Top 25 Poll this week, checking in at #25. That is the good news, the bad news is that five of Tennessee's opponents ( Alabama, Georgia, Missouri, Arkansas and Oklahoma) are also ranked in the same poll higher than the Vols. It highlights just how hard…

With the Vols poised for a breakout year, so much will depend on an offense that values the ball (translated - no devastating turnovers) and uses a run game to set up the passing attack. Jalen Hurd and Alvin Kamara give the Vols what should evolve as a devastating one — two punch this season…

This week fall practices officially got started with plenty of newcomers that missed the spring practices. Finally, some of the highly recruited players and transfers are on Rocky Top working to make it onto the depth charts for the opening game. Butch Jones is excited about having the added…

Tennessee will be participating in the 2017 Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game to be held in the new Atlanta Stadium. The opponent will be Georgia Tech and with the way that Tennessee's fans travel, look for this game to sell out fast. The Monday night game will be played before a national audience on…

Media days this week in Hoover, AL, had a lot of the same old rhetoric we have heard in the past and was pretty predictable except for Coach Butch Jones. He definitely owned the moment and had the undivided attention of the media representatives from throughout the SEC. Great to have a dynam…

Here it is the second week of July and long time Tennessee football fans know what that means — Johnny Majors will be making the trek to Lake Tansi for his annual golf tournament along with his former players and staff. It is always a fun time for all the participants and fans that stop by t…

My condolences go to the family of Dana Winningham, longtime Cumberland County educator, who passed away suddenly Tuesday night at his home. He played collegiately at Tennessee Tech and was inducted into the Tennessee Tech Hall of Fame in 1988. He was inducted into the CCHS Football Hall of …

Last Thursday night at Cumberland Fellowship Church, I had the opportunity to join CCHS Jet supporters and Big Orange fans to hear former Tennessee head football coach Phillip Fulmer speak at a fund-raising dinner by the Cumberland County High School football booster club.

Spring practice and the NFL draft are over for another year. The draft did not go well for Tennessee this year. If we see any of last year's players playing in the NFL, it will be through the free agency route. Thankfully, the spring went much better for members of Team #119.

Three more practices remain until the Orange White game next Saturday. One goal is to not have any serious injuries that would derail the anticipated fall campaign. So far, Coach Butch Jones has been overly cautious with even the slightest injuries by limiting those players from contact. In …

Just when we thought it was safe to turn attention to football, the NCAA stepped in and turned things upside down again. This time, instead of Tennessee Basketball being on the outside looking in, they were actually on the right side of luck. It started with NCAA investigators relaying infor…

We are right in the middle of March Madness but for Tennessee Vol basketball fans it must feel like March Sadness. The Vols are on the outside looking in. A coaching change, transfers, and a few injuries all contributed to an average season. What a difference a year makes!

Mother Nature has played havoc on district basketball tournaments across the state, including District 6AAA's at CCHS. When the tournament resumes Saturday, the Cumberland County Lady Jets will be playing the White County Warriors for their second straight championship at 6 p.m., while the J…

The second consecutive successful National Signing Day is over and Butch Jones continues to  prove he has one of the hottest recruiting staffs in the nation. Jones certainly has shown that he has the template to rebuild the Volunteer program the right way and the recruiting efforts will tran…

I want to take this opportunity to thank Cumberland County High School for the recognition before the White County-CCHS games last Friday night. Thanks to CCHS Principal Jon Hall, CCHS Athletic Director Pat Teeples and the rest of the faculty and staff for those awards.

The next big date for Tennessee football is closing fast.  Wednesday, Feb. 4, is National Signing Day and the Vols hope to close out with another top five recruiting class. This weekend it will be all about holding on to those that might have a wandering eye while still trying to close the d…

College football is officially over with the Ohio State Buckeyes beating the Oregon Ducks 42-20 for the national championship in Dallas, TX. Ohio State defeated Alabama 42-35, while Oregon manhandled Florida State 59-20 in the semi-finals Jan. 1 to earn berths in the championship game.
