When the 2007 elementary football season opened Aug. 16, the Brown Bears were seeking their second straight county championship, but seven other teams are out to trap the champs to claim the coveted title, which will be played Oct. 2 at Stone Memorial High School.

Brown, along with Martin, Pleasant Hill and South are in one division. Players at these schools are zoned to go to CCHS. The winner from this division will play the champion from the other division — Crab Orchard/Pine View, North, Homestead and Stone. Players from the other five schools are zoned for SMHS.

Brown Elementary: Coach Rob Shirley guides the Bears' fortunes, with assistance from Dwayne Davis, Scot Golden and Dwayne Bolin, as the champs return eight players from their championship year.

Crab Orchard/Pine View Tigers: Coach Josh Randol returns 16 lettermen from last year's 3-4 squad. He will be assisted by Abe Wilson.

"I am looking forward to my second year working with a lot of these kids. We have a good amount of potential and with enough work, it could result in another great season," said Randol.

Homestead Elementary: Coach Vaughn Davis and assistant Mark Hedgecoth look to improve on their 2-5 record from last season.

Homestead returns 10 lettermen from last season.

Martin Elementary: Matt Harris is the head coach for the Eagles, who has 26 players on the 2007 roster.

North Cumberland: The Patriots finished 2006 with a 6-2 record under Roger Wakefield, who has 14-14 record.

Wakefield and Assistant Coach Bryan Simmons return 16 players from last season, including five starters.

"We are returning several linemen from last season who started on either side of the ball — offensive or defensive line and expect them to have a good year. All of our backs and receivers will be starting for the first time, but they are learning quickly and we are doing a good job," said Wakefield.

Pleasant Hill: Roger Dixon returns six lettermen, including five starters, from last year's 5-2 team. Dixon has a 27-23 record as the Hornets' mentor.

He will be assisted by Harlan Walker, Tom Pritchard, Shawn Savage and Robert Savage.

South Cumberland: Tom Guidara returns as coach of the Rebels, who finished 5-2 last season. He will be assisted by Rick Gilbert, Fred Jones, Robert Lewis and Sam Harris.

Seven letter return, including two starters.

"We are a young, hungry, improving team looking forward to the upcoming season," said Guidara.

Stone Coyotes: "We have been practicing hard, but can't do too much with these heat," said Coach Bruce Mullins, who returns nine lettermen.

He will be assisted by Chris South.
