A Crossville area man found naked in a shower with a syringe lying outside the tub and an open knife on a bathroom vanity has pleaded guilty in Cumberland County Criminal Court to robbing the homeowner.

Michael David Cox, 55, was originally facing charges of aggravated robbery, felony possession of methamphetamine and resisting arrest in connection with the July 2, 2017, incident.

Last week he pleaded no contest, or best interest plea, to a reduced charge of simple robbery, a Class C felony, and will appear in court July 8 to find out how he will serve his three-year sentence. A best interest plea goes into the record as a guilty plea.

When Crossville Police responded to a report of a robbery at a Popular St. address, the victim, Dana Walker, told them that Cox had accused him of owing the suspect $100, so he stole a purse and contents.

During a resulting search for the $100 bill taken from the purse, Sgt. Dustin Lester wrote in his report that three baggies of methamphetamine were found in the bathroom trash can.

Cox reported attempted to fight police officers in an attempt to resist his arrest.

The sentence is to not exceed three years at 30 percent. A judge will determine whether the sentence will be served, a measure of time served incarcerated followed by supervised probation, or supervised probation will be ordered by a judge.

Remaining charges were dropped.
