Barbara Parsons, speaker at the annual Cumberland County Memorial Day Ceremony, shared what Memorial Day means to her as the family of service members. She said that no one “just served.” Their service — no matter what it was — helped the overall operation.
While Memorial Day honors those who lost their lives in service, she also noted many lost the lives they would have had. While they came home, they carry with them the scars of their battles, both physical and mental.
“God has not forgotten you,” she said.
She closed with a poem written by a veteran who struggled with mental health and addiction for years after he returned.
“America is still the land of the free and the home of the brave because of our armed forces. Thank you for your service,” she said. “May you all remember those you love who have given everything for our nation, either by death in combat or a slow death in memory.”
