A Cumberland County man has been charged with backing into a juvenile and with deliberately running over a family dog during a neighborhood dispute last week, according to reports.

Edward Matthew Mackie, 35, 35 Cherry Branch Rd., is charged with reckless endangerment and cruelty to animals in warrants signed by Fairfield Glade security officer Sam Causey. Bond was set at $1,500 and a hearing will be heard in Cumberland County General Sessions Court.

Causey wrote in his report he was on routine patrol on Drew Howard Rd. when he observed a crowd of people that appeared to be engaged in a heated argument, so he stopped to investigate.

As he approached the group, a red 1992 Chevrolet C10 pickup "backed up in a reckless manner" and into a small child. The child was able to grab the back bumper and avoided falling beneath the truck.

"I yelled at the vehicle and the driver stopped. After a short moment, he began to travel forward and swerved at a dog that was in the middle of the roadway," Causey wrote in his report. "He gunned the engine and ran down and then over the dog." The officer added that it appeared to him the motorist's actions were indifferent to the child and that he "purposefully executed assault on the domestic pet."

The suspect was taken into custody without further incident.
