The man who police said stole a wrecker and then crashed the vehicle through a locked gate to make his getaway has been arrested on a sealed indictment, according to court records.

Michael Lee Thornton, 35, 16610 Hwy. 70 N, May 3 was arrested on an indictment charging theft more than $1,000 and vandalism more than $1,000, according to court documents. He is to appear for arraignment in Criminal Court on May 19.

The indictment accuses Thornton of stealing a 1993 Chevrolet wrecker valued at more than $1,000 from Chan Lawson's Chan's Frame and Body Shop and then driving it through the gate during the getaway, according to the indictment.

The incident was investigated by Crossville Det. Darrell Sherrill, Capt. Mark Rosser, Lt. Beck Wright, Sgt. Brian Tilley, Ptl. Kenneth Cherry, and Sheriff's Investigators Ben Waller and Robert Kollros and Deputies Roy Kemmer and David Hamby.

In other cases, the following indictments were handed down. Indictments are not findings of guilt but simply mean the grand jury found reasonable cause to forward the case to Criminal Court for further action.

The following defendants were arrested on pickup indictments and were released after making bond.

•Cherie Lynn Reid, 20, 4840 Genesis Rd., May 5 arrested on indictments charging promotion of the manufacture of methamphetamine and three counts of theft more than $1,000. Bond was set at $47,500 and she is to appear in Criminal Court May 19. Investigator Ben Waller.

•Donald Keith Beaty, 25, 4840 Genesis Rd., May 5 arrested for promotion of the manufacture of methamphetamine and theft less than $10,000. Bond was set at $30,000 and he is to appear in Criminal Court May 19. Investigator Ben Waller.

•Brad Lane Parsons, 21, 3407 Sparta Hwy., May 5 arrested on an indictment on 16 counts of worthless checks less than $500, worthless check more than $500, attempt to pass a worthless check more than $500. Bond was set at $15,000 and he is to appear in Criminal Court May 19. Deputy David Bowman.

•Melissa Ann Williams, 22, 3407 Sparta Hwy., May 5 arrested on an indictment on 16 counts of worthless checks less than $500, worthless check more than $500, attempt to pass a worthless check more than $500. Bond was set at $15,000 and he is to appear in Criminal Court May 19. Deputy David Bowman.

•James Eric Ford, 27, 877 High Rock Loop, May 3 arrested on two counts of theft more than $1,000, felony evading arrest. Deputy Danny Stone. Bond was set at $25,000 and court date is set for May 19.

•Benji Dale Persinger, 27, 767 Cherry Branch Rd., May 5 arrested on three counts of sexual battery by an authority figure.

•Timmy Lee Twombley, 35, 517 Fourth St., May 8 arrested on a grand jury indictment charging four counts of incest. Bond was set at $75,000 and arraignment set for May 19.

•Kenneth Leslie Sherrill, 32, 55 Third St., Crab Orchard, May 8 arrested on a charge of theft more than $10,000. Bond was set at $25,000 and arraignment for May 19.
