The Visually Impaired Support (VIS) Group of Cumberland County, TN held a board of directors meeting recently to review events of 2009 and approve matters for 2010.

The first order of business was to thank treasurer Barb Dorgelo for her efforts in obtaining grant monies. Volunteer Energy Cooperative's "Customers Share" program and Middle Tennessee Natural Gas provided funds this past year. These grant monies and the gifts from three area Lions Clubs allowed the VIS Group to fulfill one of their major goals.

Five Closed Circuit televisions (CCTVs) were loaned to members. Two were purchased from grant monies, one came from the Hamilton County and Fairfield Glade Lions Clubs, one from the Crossville Lions Club and one was donated by an individual. In addition, other items of assistance were provided including a talking blood pressure machine.

The good news for 2010 is that the United Fund has approved the VIS Group for a $4,000 grant. This will allow them to continue supplying needed equipment so their members can live a productive life. It will also provide a means to investigate other ways to find solutions for sight-impaired people in our community.

Another important item was approved for 2010. The VIS Group will become affiliated with the Tennessee Council of the Blind. This will also make them affiliated members of the American Council of the Blind. This will keep the VIS Group appraised of all matters relating to visually impaired in the state of Tennessee and the nation.

The last item on the agenda was the election of officers for 2010. Jerry Hearndon remains president along with treasurer Barbara Dorgelo and secretary Linda Embry. Ken Steadman was elected as the new vice president.

Monthly meetings are held the second Thursday except for August when a board meeting is scheduled. The meetings start at 9:30 a.m. and run until noon at The Bank of Crossville, 1251 North Main Street (large red brick building across from McDonald’s). The first hour is for business and guest speakers are invited for the second half. Transportation is available for those in need for a small charge from UCHRA.
