The oriental style of painting on silk fabric is famous throughout the world as an art form of luminous beauty which transcends the boundaries of mere printed fabric or painted canvas. The Art Guild at Fairfield Glade is offering a workshop to help visual artists of all levels and mediums to learn the oriental style of painting on silk, known as Arashi Shibori. Participants will explore the entire process of silk painting from using the proper materials to completion of a work of art to frame or wear. Throughout the twelve hours of instruction participants will learn how to use dyes, paint, resist methods, the care of silk and how to frame their work properly if it is intended to be mounted as wall art.

Workshop instructor Camilla Staton Emerson is an accomplished artist and has been teaching for 25 years in Michigan, Ohio, Florida, and Cumberland County. She has had one woman art shows in Florida and Ohio, been featured in art publications, and has won many awards including several at local shows.

Emerson’s workshop, "Painting on Silk," will be held for two full days on Tuesday and Wednesday, June 22 and 23, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., a total of 12 hours of instruction. Fees are $125 for the public ($100 for Art Guild members) with a $50 deposit required by May 31. A $25 kit of supplies may be purchased at beginning of the class, but participants are encouraged to bring their own supplies if they have them. A complete supply list is available at the Plateau Creative Art Center. Extra silk will be available at class. Because the class meets for full days, participants are encouraged to bring their own lunch, or place an order in advance from Wildwood Catering for delivery to the PCAC. The lunch menu is available at the PCAC.
