The public is invited to join the activities marking the Avalon Center’s Celebrate Life Without Violence event on Saturday, Oct. 4, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. This event, at Crossville’s Centennial Park, commemorates October as National Domestic Violence month and will showcase the annual Avalon Center Walkathon. As in years past, supporters walk to raise awareness about domestic violence, honor victims who have lost their lives to violence and raise money to support the comprehensive services offered by the Avalon Center. In addition, activities this year include a non-competitive run, children’s activities, safety and wellness exhibits. This year the family dog can walk or run with its owner in the walk/run portion of the event, participate in the Tour du Paws costume contest or just accompany its family for a day of fun. Prizes to be awarded throughout the day include, but are not limited to, a digital flat screen TV, an auto GPS navigational device, two season tickets to the Lady Vols Basketball home events and two tickets to a NASCAR event in Bristol, TN. Many other prizes will be available for children who participate in the Kid Zone activities. Food and beverages will be available for purchase at the event.
Walkers, runners and canine entrants collect pledges to help assist the Avalon Center in its mission to provide comprehensive support to adult and child victims of domestic violence and sexual assault, to promote community awareness and prevention through education, and to build and support a community culture that stands against violence. The Avalon Center provides emergency shelter, a 24-hour crisis line, a children’s and school outreach program, professional counseling, and court advocacy support to individuals and families that have suffered domestic and sexual abuse.
Bring your friends, family and well socialized dog to this fun filled event. You can have a day full of entertainment for the whole family while supporting the Avalon Center’s efforts to make our communities nicer places for us all to live. For more information (or to register for the walk /run portion of the event only), please call 456-0747.
