Wood carvers of the Crossville Carving Group are taking a carving lesson from instructor Larry Nowell in October. Nowell has been invited to teach intermediate carvers how to create a portrait in wood. Each student is carving a portrait of someone special to them. What wonderful gifts to give — a carved portrait of your loved one!

Nowell, a Knoxville resident, is coming to Crossville for the weekend of Oct. 19-21 where he will hold the class in “The Carving Corner” located in the Yamaha Dealership of Crossville. Dealership owner Jim Buckner created this special carving area for his father, Orval Buckner, long time member of the Crossville Carving Group. Orval can often be found "whittling away" and spending time with his son in the Yamaha dealership.

You are invited to see the Crossville Carving Club hone their skills while carving portraits in wood under the tutelage of Larry Nowell, known for his sculptures in wood.

If you want to learn to carve or, if you are a skilled carver, and want to share your talent, join the wood carvers group at the Cumberland County High School on Thursday evenings at 5 p.m. in the workshop. Call Everett Elkins at 788-5329 for more information about the Thursday workshops.
