The Arc of Cumberland County held their first school-age dance on Sunday, March 12, at The Youth Center. Teenagers and young school-age children with cognitive and or physical disabilities danced the afternoon away with their friends and family.

The afternoon of dancing and fun was organized by The Arc's social event committee and sponsored by Crossville Memorial. Also on hand to show their support and help was the CCHS boys soccer team. The soccer team players helped get things set up, tore down and everything in between.

The Arc has been in Cumberland County for thirty years and is a United Fund Agency that works to ensure that people with developmental disabilities are included where they live, learn, work and play within their community. One person in particular that has given so much of herself and time to improve the quality of life for so many individuals in Cumberland County with disabilities is the current Arc president, Glenda Bond. Bond was presented with a plaque and a dozen roses on behalf of The Arc board of directors and from the kids attending the dance as a reflection of their gratitude for her years service.

The Arc is probably best known in Cumberland County for their annual Special Olympic events which also pulls in a multitude of community volunteers. However The Arc wants the community, self-advocates and families of children with special needs to be aware of The Arc's efforts to put together a new, year-round recreational program for school age kids.

The Arc has several upcoming parent workshops scheduled along with a new exciting recreational workshop for brothers and sisters who have siblings with a wide variety of special needs. The new program is modeled after a National Sibling workshop known as "Sibshops." Sibshops are for children between the ages of 7 1/2 to 13 and will meet again on Friday, May 5, from 5-8:30 at Pine Eden Baptist Church.
