Like Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz, “It feels so good to be home.” When the storm hit Kansas and Dorothy was having her dream she just wanted to get home.

Vacations are great, and I had arranged for ours in advance so our college granddaughter could join the family. I was looking forward to being gone and away from the busy life we enjoy here in Fairfield, and we were looking forward to seeing our Florida children and grandchildren.

When the vacation was over and we began the drive to Tennessee, we were just as anxious to come home as we had been to go away.

My mother, who was having her mini vacation at Senior House while we were gone, said, “It is so good to be back home and sleep in my own bed.” I had to agree.

I seem to pack too many clothes and not the right ones, so when we get home I am washing even the clean clothes as they are wrinkled from the trip. First day home I'm busy answering the mail, phone messages and putting the clothes away, but that is part of the vacation. We had a wonderful time, but as Dorothy said, “There is no place like home.”

I stepped out onto our deck and could not help but give thanks for the beauty we have here. With spring coming the daffodils, crocus and periwinkle were blooming while the rest of the ground is still sleeping.

We have so much to be thankful for. I could not help thinking about the Katrina victims who may never have a home to return to. They loved their homes as much as we do ours and for them it will never be the same. They did not have a chance to pack a suitcase or take cherished items with them; they were focused on staying alive.

Our sons’ neighbor in Florida takes his truck full of supply items monthly to one of the areas where there is a great need. I know others who are continuing to help the need there and youth groups that are going this summer to do what they can to help people in a time of need. It is so easy to forget the losses of these people.

Dorothy woke up and the people she loved were all around her… There’s no place like home.

Love in Him, Bev
