The Cumberland Medical Center Wellness Complex was one of the winners in the 10th annual Ovation Awards, announced in the July 2010 issue, by the Cumberland Business Journal, a regional publication that reports on area businesses in 15 counties that make up the Upper Cumberland. The Wellness Complex won in the “Excellence in Professional Services” category.
The Wellness Complex was also recently voted “the Best Health Facility” in Cumberland County by readers of the Crossville Chronicle.
In October 1997, when the Wellness Complex celebrated its 10th anniversary, the Tennessee House of Representatives noted in a proclamation, “…our state and nation places greater emphasis on proper nutrition and exercise. It is most appropriate for this General Assembly to honor those exemplary institutions and facilities that promote good health in a manner that earned a positive response and universal acclaim from their respective communities.” It also recognized Tres Baucum, facilities manager, for his “vision by promoting healthy lifestyles through a wide variety of excellent programs.”
The Medical Fitness Association (MFA), based in Richmond, VA, presented the CMC Wellness facilities its Distinguished Achievement Award in 2007 and 2009. It was judged in the 20,000 to 50,000 square feet category, generally a rural setting. He was also named the Manager of the Year by the MFA in 2009. The professional recognition commended Baucum for the wide variety of programs and services and for his ability to operate the complexes in a business-like and fiscally responsible way.
“Our main goal is to promote healthy lifestyles," said Baucum. "We also devote a substantial amount of time to cardiac rehabilitation, diabetes education, weight management and medical screenings. Flu shots every fall are part of our job as well as shingles inoculation year ‘round.”
The Crossville Wellness Complex, at 130 Woodmere Mall, Crossville, opened March 17, 1997 and has 2,160 members. The average age is 53 and 60 percent are seniors.
The Wellness Complex at Fairfield Glade, at 130 Stonehenge Dr., in Fairfield Glade, opened on July 21, 2003, has 25,000 square feet, and has 1,721 members. The average member’s age is 64 and 70 percent of the members are seniors.
The most popular in-center service at both facilities is cardiac rehabilitation with 25,125 visits. Some 3,000 visits are for a variety of other medical services. In the fitness category, personal training, one-on-one exercise for a member with a trainer, accounts for 5,710 visits at Fairfield Glade and 2,508 at Crossville.
The complexes sponsor support groups for depression, stroke, cardiac, cancer and diabetes, open to members and non members. Seminars are offered often on a variety of health-related topics. Staff members are available as speakers for local community groups.
The facilities offer a reduced enrollment fee twice a year and give scholarships to individuals in the community who need assistance.
More than $80,000 a year is designated for charity to help groups and individuals in need. Employees and support groups sponsor events to help raise the funds.
