Every year about this time numerous individuals and agencies contact the Avalon Center to inquire about Avalon's provision of school supplies, including backpacks, to school aged children. Avalon works not only with its own clients and their families but also with local schools in its service areas to help make these supplies available to low income students.

In Cumberland County about 18% of the households are below poverty level. Especially in these households, purchasing all that is listed on school supply lists can be a special challenge.

Avalon Center depends upon generous community minded citizens all year round for assistance with its programs to help victims of domestic and sexual abuse, both adults and children. Last year, Avalon made 224 youth targeted presentations, mainly in the schools in Avalon’s five county service areas, to about 9000 individuals, most of them children. Topics for these presentations are age appropriate and include bullying prevention, stranger safety, gender respect and healthy dating behavior.

Your help with school supplies goes hand-in-hand with Avalon’s efforts in working with Cumberland County youth.

You may drop off supplies at the Avalon office at 100 Woodmere Mall, Suite 105 (weekdays, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m.) or the Second Chance Store in the Crossville Outlet Mall (Monday through Saturday, 9 a.m.-4:15 p.m., Sunday, 1-6 p.m). For more information, please call 456-0747.
