At issue are the Stop Online Piracy Act in the House of Representatives and the Protect IP Act in the Senate. The bills aim to stop copyright infringement by foreign websites, but opponents argue their effects will be felt by all Internet users. The bills put the burden on internet service providers and websites to monitor for potential copyright infringement and allow for entire sites to be blocked for hosting or linking to pirated content.
Backers of the bill include the Motion Picture Association of America, record labels, book publishers, television networks and others. They say online piracy is devastating their industries and putting jobs at risk.
