Tesla String Quartet in concert Nov. 2 at Palace

CROSSVILLE — The Performing Arts Alliance of Rural Tennessee is pleased to present the Tesla String Quartet in concert with clarinetist Wonkak Kim at the Palace Theatre at 72 S. Main Street in Crossville at 7 p.m. Nov. 2.

Winner of the Gold Medal at the 2012 prestigious Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition and Third Prize in the 2012 London International String Quartet Competition, the Tesla Quartet was formed at The Juilliard School in 2008 and quickly established itself as one of the most promising young ensembles in New York, winning Second Prize at the J.C. Arriaga Chamber Music Competition only a few months after its inception. The London Evening Standard called their rendition of the Debussy Quartet “a subtly coloured performance that balanced confidently between intimacy and extraversion.”

From 2009 to 2012 the quartet (violinists Ross Snyder and Michelle Lie, violist Megan Mason, and cellist Kimberly Patterson) held a fellowship as the Graduate String Quartet-in-Residence at the University of Colorado-Boulder, where they studied with the world-renowned Takács Quartet.

The quartet has enjoyed a busy performing schedule, both in the States and abroad. Recent engagements include performances as the Quartet-in-Residence at the Strings Music Festival in Colorado.

Korean-born clarinetist Wonkak Kim has captivated audiences around the globe with his “excellent breath control” (The Washington Post) and “exuberant musicianship” (Fanfare). A laureate of the Presser Music Award, Kim received over a dozen international prizes and is frequently featured with orchestras/ensembles worldwide.  Kim is currently Assistant Professor of Clarinet at Tennessee Tech, first clarinetist of the Bryan Symphony Orchestra, and a member of the Cumberland Quartet. Wonkak Kim will join the Tesla Quartet in a performance of the much-loved Mozart Clarinet Quintet in A major, K581, as well as selections from Krehl’s Clarinet Quintet in A major. The Tesla Quartet will conclude the program with the Beethoven String Quartet in F major, Op.59 No.1, the well-known "Razumovsky" quartet.

Tickets for the performance are $12 for adults and $6 for students, and may be purchased by calling the Palace Theatre at 931-484-6133, or online at www.palacetheatre-crossville.com. Click on the event you want to attend to purchase your tickets.
