Dance to Valentine’s classics Feb. 6 at Fairfield Glade Big Band event

CROSSVILLE — The Swing Street Big Band launches its 2014 dance season at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 6, at the Fairfield Glade Community and Conference Center with a music program designed for Valentine's.

“We’re including five romantic favorites during our first set that befits the Valentine’s Day season,” says band director William Schneider.

Two are slow dances, two are foxtrots and one is a swing, he said.

They are: “My Funny Valentine,” “This Guy’s in Love With You,” “Let’s Fall in Love,” “Our Love Is Here to Stay” and “Almost Like Being In Love.”

All told, the band will play 38 charts during three sets of dance music.

“Besides foxtrots, slow dances and swing dances, the program will also include Latin rhythms, a line dance, a country western ballad, and a tango,” Schneider said.

The event will be the first of 11 scheduled performances the dance band plans this year. Eight are on the first Thursday of the month, February through June, and September through November, Schneider said. In addition, three Saturday dances are scheduled for July 5, Aug. 9 and Dec. 6.

Schneider said the dates are in response to requests from dance enthusiasts for a more regular monthly schedule. For the past two years, dances were held on Friday or Saturday nights during different weeks of the month.

“We worked closely with the Fairfield Glade Community Club staff to find a regular date in every month that was available for our program. The first Thursday of every month worked for eight of the 12 months of the year. The new schedule will allow us to perform for a dance every month except January,” Schneider said.

The band’s performance continues a 16-year tradition of regular big band dances in Fairfield Glade. Schneider, a member of the band’s saxophone section, is a retired commercial airline pilot, who resides in Sparta. He founded the Black Tie Big Band in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1999, and led it until he moved to Tennessee in 2004.

The Fairfield Glade Community and Conference Center is at 128 Stonehenge Road, six miles north of I-40 (Exist 322, Peavine Road).

Tickets are $27.50 per couple ($13.75 per person), including tax, in advance. Tickets at the door, if available, are $33 per couple ($16.50 per person).
