Winter concert to feature Ross

CROSSVILLE — The Southern Stars Symphonic Brass are presenting their winter concert on Sunday, Feb. 17, at 3 p.m. at Stone Memorial High School's auditorium. The hit TV show "Dallas" is in revival this winter with JR Ewing up to his tricks. The SSSB has their own JR as guest artist and Jason Ross is the popular 16-year veteran of the Cumberland County Playhouse. Most people have seen Jason in nearly every musical, comedy or drama at the Playhouse and have enjoyed his special creative talents. However, his performance with the Southern Stars will showcase him in a new light, singing classic big band arrangements. Jason will be featured with the SSSB on the Frank Sinatra hit "I've Got You Under My Skin" and Bobby Darin's classic "Mack the Knife." Ross is appearing with cooperation of the Cumberland County Playhouse.

This 30-piece professional brass ensemble utilizes 27 musicians on brass instruments and 3-4 percussionists. Instrumentation for the Symphonic Brass includes cornets, flugelhorn, alto horns, baritones, euphoniums, tenor and bass trombones, Eb and Bb tubas. The percussionists play a wide variety of percussion equipment including snare and bass drums, drum kit, xylophone, marimba, vibraphone, tympani, concert bells, chimes, cymbals, bongos and other miscellaneous instruments. The Southern Stars are celebrating their 5th anniversary, and if you have not yet been to one of their "Premium Entertainment" concerts, you are missing one of the truly outstanding entertainment options in Middle Tennessee.

Besides the two featured selections with Jason Ross, the remainder of the concert will include "76 Trombones," theme from "Indian Jones and the Temple of Doom," a euphonium duet — "Cousins" featuring Brandon Jones and Layne Todd, "Shoutin' Liza Trombone," "Fanfare for the Common Man," "Variations on Laudate Dominum," "Let the Bright Seraphim" — piccolo trumpet duet by John Bohlen and Steven Collins, "Hoedown" by Aaron Copland, and "Laura" featuring Chris McCormick on a flugelhorn solo. This concert is sponsored by our season sponsor, Bed & Biscuit Kennel, and our concert sponsors, Cumberland County Bank, Farm Bureau Insurance (Gordon Atchley), and the Heart & Vascular Center of Cookeville Regional Medical Center.

Tickets are $20 for adults and $5 for students. A special "short season" ticket with admission for this Feb. 17 concert and the spring concert on April 20 is available for the discounted price of $35. Tickets are available in advance at the following locations: Cumberland Eye Care Center in Fairfield Glade, First National Bank of TN branches in Crossville and Fairfield Glade, Bed & Biscuit Kennel off Peavine Road, and at the box office and website of the Cumberland County Playhouse. If you have not heard this gem of a music ensemble in person, it is time you found out why they have rated so highly by anyone who has treated themselves to a concert. Why not use this opportunity to give yourself (and a friend) a Valentine treat, and hear some great entertainment.
