Playhouse to hold auditions for Footloose

CROSSVILLE — The Cumberland County Playhouse is pleased to announce open auditions for its upcoming production of Footloose: The Musical, which will be shown from February 1-24, 2013. The first rehearsal will be on Wednesday, Dec. 19, from 6-9 p.m. (scripts and music will be handed out at this time). The next rehearsal will be on Tuesday, January 8, 2013. Footloose will be directed and choreographed by Leila Nelson (The Music Man).

Footloose is a story of values, faith, traditions... and the challenges of growing up. When Ren and his mother move from Chicago to a small farming town, he finds himself at odds with the rigorous local edicts, including a ban on dancing instituted by the local preacher. When the reverend’s rebellious daughter sets her sights on Ren, her roughneck boyfriend tries to sabotage Ren’s reputation. The heartfelt story that emerges is of a father longing for the son he lost and of a young man aching for the father who walked out on him. The familiar hits of its Oscar® nominated film score to dynamic new songs written for the stage version, Footloose celebrates the wisdom of not only listening to young people, but guiding them with a warm heart and an open mind.

The first round of auditions will take place on Saturday, Dec. 8, from 5-9 p.m.  Individual auditions will take place between 5-7 p.m. by appointment. Anyone wishing to be considered for a principal role must have an individual audition. Please prepare 16-32 bars of a song (please bring sheet music in the proper key or a cued up recorded accompaniment, instrumental/karaoke only) and a one minute monologue. Auditions will be held from 7-8 p.m. Anyone who does not participate in the individual auditions must attend group auditions. No prepared material is needed. Callbacks will be held from 8-9 p.m.

A second round of auditions will take place on Sunday, Dec. 16, from 6-9 p.m. In addition to callbacks, people who were unable to attend the Dec. 8 auditions will be seen during this session. Auditionees who play an acoustic instrument (guitar, etc.) are encouraged to bring it with them on both nights.

The auditions are open to ages 12-19 with a few limited roles for adult performers.  The Playhouse requests that no one younger than 12 attend these auditions; there will be opportunities in Les Misérables and The Best Christmas Pageant Ever for younger performers. No previous Playhouse experience is necessary and all are welcome to audition.

To schedule an audition appointment, please contact Meka Doxtator Barrier at 484-4324. If you are a teacher and would like someone to come and speak with you or your students about auditioning, you may also speak to Meka at the previously listed number.
