Plateau Chapter of the Tennessee Trails Association plans August hikes

The Plateau Chapter of the Tennessee Trails Association announces their hiking schedule for August.

• There is a leaderless hike (typically 5-7 miles) every Wednesday morning. For additional information or to get on an e-mail list for the hikes, contact Bill Harris at 484-9152 or visit the Plateau Chapter blog at http://ttaplateauchapter.blogspot.com. Rain cancels.

• Aug. 8 — Rock Island State Park, Rock Island. There are several short hikes that will be combined for a total of about 5 miles. The highlight of the visit to Rock Island State Park is the large waterfall created by the Great Falls Dam. If there has been enough rain, a side trip to Burgess Falls State Park to see the three consecutive water falls (1.5 mile loop) may be added to the itinerary. These hikes are not very strenuous, except for the elevation change if you expect to walk to the bottom of Burgess Falls. Bring money for lunch at the Rock Island Market. Meet at the Tractor Supply parking lot at 7 a.m. CDT. For more information and to register, contact Ginger Cass at 788-1466.

• Aug. 13 — chapter meeting at the Art Circle Public Library Community Room beginning at 6:30 p.m. CDT. Meet to catch up after the summer break and plan hikes for the fall.

• Aug. 22 — Byrd Creek Loop, Cumberland Mountain State Park, Crossville. To beat the heat, the group will try an evening hike around Byrd Creek to Old Mail Road and back. This hike is about 4.5 miles long, has a couple of creek crossings, but is generally not very strenuous. Meet at the boat dock parking lot at 5:30 p.m. CDT.
