The Cumberland County “Mountaineer” youth football program is seeking players and cheerleaders for the 2008 football season on May 24. Interested persons should meet at the upper Mountaineer practice field located next to the main Community Complex parking lot from 9 to 11 a.m.

Children ages 5 to 12 are eligible for season play. Practices are held 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday with games on Saturdays. The Mountaineers participate in the Tennessee Valley Youth Football Conference. There are two Cumberland County teams in each age division competing against teams from Spring City, Pikeville, and Dunlap.

A football camp is also sponsored by the league June 16 through June 21 for any child with an interest in football. Forms are available at French’s Shoes. Camp cost is $30 per child with a maximum household cost of $60. Camp times will be 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday. All campers get a T-shirt and Saturday lunch. Nightly motivational speakers and football drills without child to child “hitting” are scheduled.

Camp participants do not have to participate in season play, but will be allowed to sign up at the end of camp, if age division space is available.

Youth sports provide children with much needed physical exercise to combat childhood obesity. Participation also encourages healthy minds teaching life skills like team work, goal setting and discipline. Bonds are created among team mates encouraging friendships and socialization.
