For the first time in local history, the Elks Hoop Shoot contest will have two young boys representing the Cumberland County Elks Lodge 2751 in the state competition.

So far, these youngsters have won their elementary school contest, successfully won the local contest, came in first in their age group and now go on to Nashville on Feb. 16 for the state program.

Shawn York, 10, and a fourth grader at North Cumberland, will compete in the 10-11 year-old boys category.

Tayler Houston, 12, last year's winner of the state contest, will compete in the 12-13 year-old, and is seventh grader at Homestead Elementary School.

Shawn's parents, Brett and Nelda York, and Tayler's parents, Jeff and Lee Houston, will be on hand to cheer their children to victory.

Cumberland County Elks Hoop Shoot Director Leroy Hammond and his wife, Janet, will be present to offer their support and encouragement.

The winners of this competition will go on to the regionl event in Paris, TN, on Saturday, March 8. The regional winners will go on to compete in the national finals.

Tayler Houston went all of the way to the national event last yeara.

Exalter Ruler Jim Anderson stated, "We are very proud of these young boys and will be cheering them onm to the finals. We will keep everyone posted on their accomplishments."
