On a sunny, warm Sunday morning, 126 men and women participated in the annual Johnny Majors Invitational Golf Tournament, with proceeds going to the House of Hope.

Jim Smelcher, Dewey Warren, Phil Hatcher and Bill Lanter defended their championship with a low net 16-under-par 56, one stroke better than Terry Henry, John McHenry, John Cook and John C. Cook (57).

Gary and Tersa Lively, Larry Hembree and Tim Jones finished third with a 59, while fourth place went to Glenn Streno, John Warren, R. Kelly and Ron Long (60).

Dirk Daniel, Mickey Dearstone, Con Hunley and Bobby Denton also shot a 60.

The tournament returned to Lake Tansi in 2006, after a 14-year absence, with former players and coaches with Majors at UT, Pittsburgh, Iowa State, Lynchburg High School and Huntland High School returning to play golf and share stories with Majors.

This was a very special tournament, as Majors celebrated his 75th birthday earlier in the year, and everyone who attended Saturday's fish fry sang "Happy Birthday" to the former coach.

Rep. John Tanner, Ty Tanner, R.Tanner and Portis Tanner won the second flight with a 15-under-par 57, two strokes ahead of Lew Belote, David Woodall, Johnny Watts and Bill Whitesell.

2009 overall champions Hoss Wyatt, Virgil Verguson, Max Swafford and Jerry Crabtree finished third in the second flight with a 62 in a scorecard playoff over Tom Looney, Lawrence Steelman, Frank Barnwell and Paul Pennington.

Gary and Melisa Blackborn, Steve Hooper and Bob Martin won the third flight in a scorecard playoff over Phillip Mattingly, Phillip Mattling Jr., John Hoover and Matt Allen. Both teams shot a 12-under-par 60.

Tom Turchetta, Nathan Miller, Rich Harris and Jerry Abner took third place in a scorecard playoff with Merv Krakau, Dave McCurrey, George Amundson and John Quinn. Both teams finished at 11-under-par 61.

Closest to the hole winners were Eddie Liskovec, #3; John C. Cook, #6; Mike Lasorsa, #12; and Frank Barnwell, #15. Other special prize winners were Eddie Liskovec, longest drive on #2; John (Cookie) Cook, closest to the line on #16; Chad Staples, longest drive on #18; and Lee Gunn, closest to the line on #2.
