The Stone Memorial Panther volleyball team opened the 2008 season this week by beating Livingston Monday and Knox Karns Wednesday.

Stone Memorial played in their first match of the season Monday, Aug. 25, against Livingston Academy. The junior varsity won the opener 25-16 and 25-11. The varsity came out on top winning 25-14, 25-15, 25-1, according to first-year Coach Megan Kunzelman.

In the second match of the season Wednesday against Karns, the JVs fought back to win the first game of the match 25-22 and won the second game 25-11 giving them the victory.

In the varsity game vs. Karns, the Lady Panthers were also victorious, but the win didn't come easy.

The Lady Panthers fought their way back from six points down in games one and three to take the win. The scores of each game were 25-19, 25-22, 25-23.

The Lady Panthers were led by Mary K. Krueger (middle hitter) with seven kills, six digs and four blocks; Chelbi Brady with 10 kills and six blocks; Brittany Eller with five kills and 13 digs; Alli Brewer with nine digs, and Kelli Keck with 20 assists.

"I am extremely proud of the fight in these girls, and tonight it paid off," said Kunzelman.

SMHS plays at 6 p.m., 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. Friday in pool play for the White

County Tournament and then returns Saturday for pool play at 11 a.m. and noon. Tournament play begins at 2 p.m. Saturday.
