The Cumberland County High School soccer team opened the season by tying Smith County 1-1 Tuesday night.

"We possessed the ball better than ever and held it the majority of the game. After our first goal was called back because of an officiating error, freshman Sammy Zeino scored his first goal of the season off of an assist from senior Cisco Chavez," said Coach Cub Whitson.

Smith County played physical in the second half and scored off a free kick after an obstruction call with five minutes left in the game.

"We had two more great chances to score after that. We just couldn't get the ball in the back in the back of the net. It was a great learning experience for our young team. I believe we learned the value of finishing," said Whitson.

The Jets started a four-game road swing at Dekalb County Thursday night, followed by visits to Oneida (March 18), Cookeville (March 25) and Kingston (March 27), before returning home April 1 to play White County in a district matchup.
