Atkinson is first Lions Club Student of the Month honoree for 2014 school year

CROSSVILLE — Stone Memorial senior Felisha Atkinson was selected by counselor Andrea Simmons to receive “Student of the Month” honors. The Fairfield Glade Lions Club chose her for the month of August to start the 2013-2014 school year.

Felisha has been an active young lady during her high school years. She served as treasurer of the Drama Club during her freshman year and appeared in one play. She played on the soccer team in sophomore and junior years and also served as manager of the boys’ soccer team in her junior year. She decided to focus on her studies during her senior year rather than play soccer but did become active in the Renaissance Club.

Downtown Crossville Inc., Business & Professional Women and Taste of Crossville have all benefited from Felisha’s volunteer work. She also read books and stories to Shepherd’s Little Flock for one year and has rung bells for the Salvation Army for four years. Felisha plans to attend a yet to be selected college right after high school and fulfill her love of science by majoring in biology.

The Fairfield Glade Lions Club has been recognizing “Students of the Month” for over twenty years with the help of the high school counselors. For years, it included only Cumberland County High School with the selection of 10 students. This changed with the addition of Stone Memorial High School several years ago. Five students were honored from each high school on an alternating basis. This changed again two years ago when the Phoenix School was added with a selection of two students. Ten students in all remained the same due to the limited FFG Lions Club Scholarship Fund that is shared at the end of the year. Four students each from CCHS and SMHS in addition to two from The Phoenix School now make up the selection of 10 students.

The Lions Club will continue to honor the students and their parents along with school counselors at a special dinner in May 2014. Each student will receive an engraved plaque with their name and month honored and an introduction to all Lions in attendance.
