From 1942 to 1945, over 15,000 Jewish children passed through Terezin, a former military garrison set up as a ghetto (concentration camp) for Jewish people. It soon became a station, a stopping-off place, for hundreds of thousands on their way to the gas chambers of Auschwitz. When Terezin was liberated in May 1945, only about a hundred children were still alive. These few then went back to the scattered pieces of their lives, their homes and their families. One of the survivors, Raja Englanderova, having lived through it all, teaching the children when there was nothing to teach with, helping to give them hope when there was little enough reason for hope, creating a little world of laughter, of flowers and butterflies behind the barbed wire, tells the true story of the children. This play is hers and it is theirs. There were no butterflies at Terezin, of course, but for the children, butterflies became a symbol of defiance, making it possible for them to live on and play happily while waiting to be transported to Auschwitz.

This play is history as much as any play can be, showing the best and the worst of which the human heart is capable.

Much of the script, artwork, and poetry used in Jet Theatrix's production is pulled directly from the diaries, writings, and artwork of real children who died at Auschwitz. The story of those years at Terezin remains in drawings and poems collected and published in the book, I Never Saw Another Butterfly. This piece is especially appropriate for history, language arts, and English classes.
