Homestead honored for reading, math proficiency

CROSSVILLE — Homestead Elementary has earned national recognition for outstanding performance in advancing students’ math and reading practice and proficiency across mutiple grade levels.

Homestead Elementary was awarded Accelerated Math Model and Reading Model School Certification by Renaissance Learning, a Wisconsin Rapids, WI, based company.

Accelerated Math Model School Certification demonstrates that a majority of the school’s students have met or exceeded goals set for levels of accuracy on math assignments.  Certification recognizes the educators at Homestead Elementary for monitoring individual student and whole-class progress, intervening with struggling students, as well as setting and achieving goals.

Accelerated Reader Model School Certification demonstrates that a majority of the school’s students have met or exceeded goals for reading practice and comprehension. After reading fiction and non-fiction books at the appropriate level, students take quizzes to assess their comprehension. Accelerated Reader provides immediate feedback to help teachers facilitate reading level growth.

“I appreciate the dedication and hard work of the teachers at HES,” said Robin Perry, principal at Homestead Elementary. “Their investment will ensure our students achieve proficency and are ready to embrace the challenges of Common Core State Standards. This accomplishment is something everyone in the community can be proud of, and assures us our students will be college and career ready.”

This is the school’s second year reaching Accelerated Math Model School Certification. This is the ninth year in a row the school has been recognized as a Model Reading School. Homestead Elementary was also recognized by the state of Tennessee this year as a Reward School for TCAP Achievement in the top five percent of Tennessee schools.

Renaissance Learning developed Accelerated Math and Reading to assist teachers in differentiating math practice and instruction and enables teachers to personalize reading practice and monitor comprehension to optimize growth. The program enables teachers to address each student’s needs through personalized practice. The software creates and automatically scores math assignments that are tailored to each student’s current level and provides teachers with immediate, ongoing feedback about students’ daily math practice and progress.
