Roane State commencement set May 10-11

CROSSVILLE — Roane State Community College will hold commencement ceremonies on May 10-11.

Both events, to be held in the gym on the Roane County campus in Harriman, will be equal in presentation.

• Friday, May 10, at 7 p.m. (Eastern) for recipients of the Associate of Applied Science degree (A.A.S) in nursing, recipients of A.A.S. degrees in allied health sciences, and for recipients of certificates in allied health sciences.

• Saturday, May 11, at 10 a.m. (Eastern) for recipients of Associate of Arts degrees and Associate of Science degrees, recipients of the Associate of Science in Teaching, and for recipients of A.A.S. degrees or certificates in all other fields.

Gaye Jolly, president and chief administrative officer of Roane Medical Center, will be the speaker for the Friday ceremony. Dr. Cuyler A. Dunbar, who served as Roane State’s first president from 1970 to 1988, will speak at the Saturday event.

Roane State will offer DVDs of graduation. Cost is $20, plus $5 for shipping and handling. Visitors may order the recordings at the commencement events, by completing the order form on Roane State’s website, by calling (865) 882-4556, or by emailing ctat@roanestate.edu.

Photographs will be available for purchase through GradImages. Graduates will have a photo taken onstage as they shake hands with Roane State President Dr. Chris Whaley and as they return to their seats. Soon after the ceremony, graduates can view and order photos at www.gradimages.com.

    The year-long fundraising efforts of the Fairfield Glade Ladies Club came to fruition at the June meeting. More than $57,575 was distributed to deserving entities in Cumberland County which included $22,500 in scholarship awards. In addition, monthly service projects for which members bring specific items needed by area social services totaled $7,598. The 550-plus members of the club, and their sponsors, are proud to have made a $65,173 investment in Cumberland County and are pleased to announce the scholarship recipients.

    Nine young men from CCHS and SMHS attended the number one American Legion Boys State program in the nation at Tennessee Technological University in Cookeville the week of May 25. This was the 75th Boys State program in Tennessee.

    Betty Fox, right, was the recipient of a $1,000 scholarship from the Beta Lambda Chapter of DKG International. She received the scholarship from chairperson Donna King, left. The scholarship will assist her in completing her degree in Elementary Education in January 2015. Fox, currently a senior at Grand Canyon University, is ready to begin her student teaching at North Elementary where she has been assisting teachers for the past several years.

    Earlier this spring, the 2014 East Tennessee History Day competition featured 290 students from East Tennessee representing 22 middle and high school programs. Ninety-four students qualified for the state level competition including one Cumberland County student. East Tennessee’s first, second and third place winners in the Junior and Senior divisions advanced to the state level competition, Tennessee History Day, sponsored by the Tennessee Historical Society in Nashville held on April 12.
