CFRA to sponsor Americanism essay contest

CROSSVILLE — Crossville Fleet Reserve Association Branch 294 is sponsoring an Americanism-Patriotism Essay Contest for students in grade 7 through 12, as well as home study Kids on the Rise students program. The essay is part of a National Fleet Reserve Association contest offering a 5000 dollar grand prize. The local branch will present a minimum of a 50 dollar grand prize for each grade winner and will then submit that winning essay to the Regional FRA which too offers a grand prize of all its received entries in the region. Those regional FRA essay winners will have their essays forwarded to National FRA which has received essay from the regions. That winner will receive the grand prize of 5000 dollars. The title of the Americanism Essay is "The Bill of Rights and Me." Listed below are the contest rules for the essay:

•All entrants shall be students in grades seven through twelve (or equivalent).

•Entrants must be sponsored by a branch of the Fleet Reserve Association or a unit of the Ladies Auxiliary.

•The essay shall be on the theme designated and shall not exceed 350 words.

•The essay shall be legibly written or typed on one side of a paper.

•A student may submit only one entry each year.

•Each entry must be accompanied by a separate sheet stating: the entrant’s name, address, zip code, telephone number, school grade (or equivalent), name of the school or the words "home schooled" or "Kids on the Rise," number of words in essay, and the sponsoring branch/unit or sponsor’s name.

•Entries submitted to branches shall be submitted to the Branch Americanism-Patriotism Committee and postmarked no later than December 1, for judging at the branch level.

•Entries sponsored by membership at large members shall be submitted to the national chairman and forwarded to an appropriate branch for judging in their respective grade group. All entries shall be postmarked no later than December 1.

•All entries become the property of the Fleet Reserve Association.

  • Local 4-Hers compete at sub-regional Achievement Day

    It was a big day for 17 very talented Cumberland County 4-Hers who competed in the Sub-regional 4-H Achievement Day held in Scott County May 12. Having been selected as county winners based on classroom demonstration and exhibit competitions, these 4-Hers were selected to advance to the sub-regional event. Competition was tough as they competed against 111 4-Hers from eight other counties. All 17 4-Hers placed in the event.

    Maci Gernt, a 4-H'er from Cumberland County, was selected as a delegate for the State Junior High 4-H Academic Conference in Knoxville, June 10-13. Gernt received intensive training in the 4-H Beef Project at the University of Tennessee.

    Jordynne Rebekkah Walker, of Crossville, received the Outstanding Freshman in Agriculture Award from the University of Tennessee at Martin College of Agriculture and Applied Sciences during a recent departmental awards banquet. Dr. Todd Winters , dean of the College of Agriculture and Applied Sciences and professor of animal sciences, and Dr. Joey Mehlhorn, professor and interim chair of agriculture, geosciences, and natural resources and director of Tennessee Governor’s School for the Agricultural Sciences, presented the award.

  • CCHS sets new student registration

    New student registration for grades 9-12 for students zoned for Cumberland County High School will be July 31. This includes any new student to the area or any student who withdrew from CCHS and is planning to return. This does not include incoming ninth-grade students from elementary schools zoned for CCHS. Students will need to register between 9 and 11 a.m.
