COCCO to give tribute to Broadway May 10

CROSSVILLE — On Friday May 10, at 7 p.m. at the Palace Theatre, the students from the Children of Crossville Chamber Orchestra (COCCO), along with the Preparatory Orchestra, will combine for the second time for an extraordinary performance. This concert is a sequel to last year's concert, which had the theme "Tribute to Hollywood." This year's theme will be a "Tribute to Broadway."

Participating students will be awesome musicians in grades 3-12. The program will open up with COCCO performing the "Concerto Grosso in D major Opus 6 #5" by George Friedrich Handel. COCCO will be assisted by auxiliary professional personnel performing the woodwind parts.

The rest of the performance will be COCCO's tribute to Broadway. The performance will include music from The Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserables, Beauty and the Beast, Lion King, Hairspray, Mamma Mia! and many others.

COCCO is still looking for sponsorships for the upcoming performance. COCCO is a 501 (3)(c) organization and all sponsorships/donations are tax deductible. Brown Elementary School was recently awarded a Tennessee Coordinated School Health grant in the amount of $2,232 to target health education, physical education, and family involvement objectives. Physical education teacher Lance Beaty wrote the grant, requesting class sets of equipment to maximize student involvement.

    Kayla Danielle Walker of Crossville is the 2013 Upper Cumberland Women’s Club Scholarship recipient. Kayla was award $1,000 by the organization at the February luncheon held at Grey Gables Bed & Breakfast in Rugby, TN.

    Thursday, Feb. 27, the Phoenix School played host to parents, guardians and the public for parent-teacher conferences and open house. As an incentive for bringing a parent or guardian, students having a parent/guardian attend had their names entered into a drawing for three gift cards. Students winning gifts cards were LaMesha Taylor, Randy Nelson and Bryant Oakes.

    Frank P. Brown Elementary students, faculty and staff would like to thank Food City for its support through the School Bucks program and community members who participate in the program. Friends and family register at a Food City location and shop to earn points throughout the school year to contribute toward a monetary reward for a selected school. Brown Elementary received $1,112 for the 2012-2013 school year with the School Bucks program, which was allocated for instructional materials. BES appreciates the involvement of the community to encourage student achievement.
