Ever notice those plaques hanging in Highland Federal Savings & Loan? Wondering how one can get their name on them? For the past 39 years, the Cumberland County Scholastic Chess Championship has been held. And, 2012 is no different except that this will be the 40th year. Those children’s names on the plaques are there for eternity.
This year the tournament will take place at the Cumberland County Community Complex, 1398 Livingston Rd., Crossville, on Saturday, Nov. 17. The only requirement is you need to be a Cumberland County student only and play in the appropriate grade level: High School (grades 9-12), Junior High School (grades 7-8), Elementary (grades 4-6), and Primary (grades 3 and below).
There are many prizes as well, with trophies for the top five, top unrated, and medals to the top 6-10 in each section. If that is not enough, there is a $1,000 Clinton H. Pearson scholarship to the high school winner. You might be thinking, “That’s awesome! How do I enter?”
The best part about this, it is absolutely free. The tournament is free if registered by Nov. 10. If you miss the free registration, it will only cost $5 at the door. Send your name, address, U.S. Chess Federation identification number (if you have one, but membership is not required to participate), grade, address, city, state, zip, phone number and school to Harry D. Sabine, P.O. Box 381, Crossville, TN 38557.
If you insist on entering at the site, the registration is Saturday, Nov. 17, 7:30-8:30 a.m. Everyone must check-in before registration ends or you will not be paired for the first round. There are five rounds: 9 a.m., 10 a.m., 11 a.m., 1 p.m., and 2 p.m., with the awards ceremony at 3 p.m. If you need more information, contact Harry D. Sabine at (931) 484-9593 or e-mail at firstname.lastname@example.org.
