Joyce Ferry Memorial Scholarship Fund established

Submitted

— The Lake Tansi Exchange Club has inaugurated the Joyce Ferry Memorial Scholarship Fund to provide financial assistance to deserving students within Cumberland County. This new program replaces and greatly expands the club’s past efforts in this area. Beginning in 2013, the club is awarding four $2,000 education annual scholarships, renewable for each year of attendance, with

a qualifying grade point average.

Joyce Ferry was highly involved in the Lake Tansi Exchange Club, having twice served as its president, and was a current state director of the National Exchange Club. Through the Joyce Ferry Memorial Scholarship program, the club honors a very important aspect of her dedicated service on behalf of the youth of Cumberland County.

The Exchange Club scholarship committee meets annually to review applications received for the coming academic year and awards scholarships based upon past school records, GPA, community service, and financial need. If selected, and a minimum GPA is maintained, the student applicant will continue receiving annual awards throughout his or her college career.

The Lake Tansi Exchange Club received numerous deserving applications for the scholarship this year, but after careful review, four local students were selected to receive the very first Joyce Ferry Memorial Scholarship awards.

Those recipients of the Joyce Ferry Memorial Scholarship are:

• Cumberland County High School student Rebecca Carter. Rebecca will be attending Tennessee Tech University majoring in Agricultural Science and aspires to be a veterinarian technician.

• Stone Memorial High School student Shelby Hilker. Shelby will be attending Roane State Community College majoring in Medical Science — Health Sciences. Having suffered debilitating diseases herself, she hopes to become a physical therapist or psychologist to help others as they have helped her.

• Cumberland County High School student Wesley Jones. Wesley will be attending Carson Newman majoring in English or History. He hopes that college will better prepare him for the challenges of life while pursuing the “American Dream.”

• Cumberland County High School student Tasha Wyatt. Tasha will be attending Tennessee Tech University, Cookeville majoring in Nursing, General Health Studies and hopes to become a registered nurse.

We congratulate our 2013 recipients of the Joyce Ferry Memorial Scholarship and we invite donations to help support this wonderful program. Anyone willing to help provide financial support of the scholarship fund can mail checks payable to the Lake Tansi Exchange Club, P.O. Box 58, Crossville, TN 38557. (Be sure and note the check is for the Scholarship Fund, and 100% of the donation will be applied for that fund.)
