Close to 40 Cumberland County fourth through sixth grade 4-H’ers competed in the countywide public speaking contest Saturday, Jan. 11, at the Palace Theatre. Competition began in November with local public speaking contests being held in the classrooms at each of the schools. More than 950 4-H Club members spoke on topics related to education and careers, with approximately 90% of the teachers giving a grade or extra credit for participation. Club winners were determined and invited to represent their classes at the county-level contest.

First-place county winners for grades 4-6 will advance to the sub-regional contest Feb. 24. All the participants in this event are to be commended for their performance.
