Cumberland County Young Marines will have a recruit training 'boot camp' beginning Sept. 13

The Young Marines is a youth education and service program for boys and girls, ages eight through high school. The Young Marines promote mental, moral and physical development of its members. The program focuses on charter building, leadership and promotes a healthy, drug-free lifestyle. The Young Marines is the focal point for the U.S. Marine Corps' youth Drug Demand Reduction efforts.

The mission of the Young Marines is to positively impact America's future by providing quality youth development programs for boys and girls that nurtures and develops its members into responsible citizens who enjoy and promote a healthy, drug-free lifestyle.

They accomplish this mission by advocating a healthy, drug-free lifestyle through continual drug prevention education; instilling in its members the ideals of honesty, fairness, courage, respect, loyalty, dependability, attention to duty, love of God and fidelity to the country and institutions; stimulate an interest in and respect for the academic achievement and the history and traditions of the United States of America; promoting physical fitness through the conduct of physical activities, including participating in athletic events and close order drill.

The national training program offers events of adventure, challenge, encampment and schools. Those are normally offered during the summer months of the year.

In the event you or your children (who are eligible) and are interested in the Young Marines, applications for enrollment will be accepted at the used book sale July 31 through Aug. 2. This will be at the Crossville Housing Authority activity center at 236 Taylor St., across from the TAD Center and behind Garrison Field.
