  • Rockwell wins PBS Reading Rainbow Illustrators and Writers contest
    Second-grade student Brooke Rockwell, the daughter of Jason and Kari Rockwell of Crossville, won the PBS Reading Rainbow Illustrators and Writers first-place award at the regional viewing area level in Cookeville on May 19.

  • Allen wins Garden Club scholarship
    The Cumberland County High School Garden Club is pleased to announce the winner of the Garden Club Scholarship for 2009, Sherissa Allen. Allen plans to use the scholarship to pursue her career in culinary arts.

  • Tennessee Technology Center treated to year-ending party
    At the end of each semester, Tennessee Technology Center at Crossville hosts an awards celebration complete with a pizza party is held to recognize outstanding high school students. Each student receives an Articulated Achievement Award which lists the course completed.

  • Stimulus funds used to balance school budget
    The Cumberland County School System has a balanced budget after federal stimulus funds were used to cover expenses in the special education department, textbook expenses were trimmed and various areas of the budget were "nickel and dimed."

  • Martin students shine in talent show
    Martin Elementary School recently held its second annual talent show, featuring students in fifth through eighth grades. Winners were, from left, Kristin Sherry, third place, who sang a song in Japanese and English; Madison Hicks, second place, who sang and accompanied herself on guitar; and Abi Stone, first place, for singing "I Will Survive."

  • Homestead Elementary faculty earn national recognition
    Educators at Homestead Elementary School have received national recognition for outstanding performance in education, Renaissance Learning announced recently.

  • North Cumberland Elementary students enjoy iris contest
    North Cumberland Elementary School recently had an iris contest. Each child that wanted to participate was asked to bring in their best iris. North had wonderful judges that came and donated their time and skills.

  • School board trims budget, still showing deficit
    Saying, "It can't hurt to ask," the Cumberland County Board of Education will return to the Cumberland County Budget Committee with a budget still showing a deficit of about $750,000.

  • Tennessee Technology Center honor students named
    Students from Cumberland County, Stone Memorial and Phoenix High School were recognized as A honor roll students for the first semester at the awards program at Tennessee Technology Center at Crossville on May 19.

  • Pickard named PDK/TTU Upper Cumberland Teacher of the Month for April
    Anna Pickard, Cumberland County High School English teacher, was selected as the PDK/TTU Upper Cumberland Teacher of the Month for April for her outstanding dedication to her students and the profession.

  • Roane State Academic Festival group awards announced
    On April 3, over 50 students competed at the Roane State Academic Festival, winning the school first place overall in the AA school division.

  • First United Methodist Church kids learn about butterflies
    The children of the school-age program at the First United Methodist Church learned about butterflies.

  • CCHS names top students for April, May
    The April and May students of the month for the freshman class at CCHS are Allysa Kerley (April), left, and Sally Phillips (May), right. They are pictured with Tina Breeding of Eye Centers of Tennessee.

  • Ollie the Otter visits area elementary schools
    On May 12, the nation's first statewide booster seat education and roadway safety campaign visited Pleasant Hill, Brown, and Crab Orchard Elementary and on May 19 Ollie visited South Cumberland Elementary.
