J.C. Davis explains to Vince Roddy and Jesse Riddle how to hold weapons used by Civil War soldiers and Matthew McClanahan looks on. Davis and McClanahan set up a Civil War camp, displaying common weaponry of both the North and South, and gave visitors a taste of coffee and hard tack.


Carlena Hester provided face painting for children at the annual Pioneer Day festival. Fair Park Senior Center has hosted the event for 23 years.


Bob Wonder works on an intarsin wood carving. The technique uses natural wood colors to provide color for the finished item.

Sue Duncan, with the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area, spins angora thread.


Dana Sappier, left, and Daniel Paul, and Lisa Brady, above, along with the Native American Turtle Clan, demonstrated Native American dancing and chanting during the festival. James Yellow Eagle provided storytelling and explained the many purposes of the different dances, while Tanasi Thunder, in the background, provided the drum for the event.


The Sparta Senior Center Square Dance Team kicked up their heels to the bluegrass music.


Paul Borchers and Stanley Clendenon and their musical friends Joyce Carol, Audine Webb and O.C. Fields, not pictured, performed square dancing music.


The gospel group Committed, with Grant Pennington, Tracy Wehr and Robert Barlow, took first place in the Music Fest group gospel competition. Marley Wyatt, who competed in the gospel individual category, was the overall winner of the Music Fest Competition.
