LOCAL VIDEO & PHOTO GALLERY: 2009 Powwow

Lorretta Howard and Daniel Paul lead an intertribal dance during the third annual Pow Wow on the Plateau, held Saturday at the Cumberland County Community Complex. The event featured Native American dancing, drumming and storytelling. It is held annually in June.

Leon Raincloud, a storyteller from the Cherokee Nation, shares traditional stories with the event goers.

Children take part in an intertribal dance, open to all those present at the powwow. Mary Cox-Pluff, one of the organizers, said, "We're trying to create awareness of the Native American culture. We try to give people a chance to experience another culture. This is a good family event, with young and old, and gives people a chance to come out and do something fun with their children or grandchildren."

Women dancers demonstrate the Women's Cloth Dance, a traditional Native American dance.

Red Road Singers perform during the event.

Dana Sappier takes part in the Men's Traditional Dance, which acts as a form of storytelling, allowing the participants to act out their accomplishments.

Southern Echo provided some of the drumming for the traditional dances.
