Relay for Life raises $147,000 before the first lap was walked

The annual Relay for Life Friday night was a rousing success before the first step was taken. Teams raised $147,000 through a variety of activities prior to Friday night's festivities. Organizers were still adding up final totals but all associated with the annual fundraising event for the American Cancer Society agreed that the event was a grand success.

As of Wednesday, $164,489.26 had been turned in and money was still being received.

Enveloped by music provided by local talent and the smell of food cooking on grills, teams gathered to attract the final dollar donations of participants who enjoyed a host of activities during the evening and dark hours of Saturday morning.

Dr. Dirk Davidson, medical oncologist, was keynote speaker at the opening ceremonies and was joined on the stand by state Rep. Eric Swafford, County Mayor Brock Hill and Joe Pruett, a cancer survivor who led the opening ceremony prayer.

Major corporate sponsors were also recognized and honored during the ceremonies prior to Mike Isaacson and Jalyn Holt leading the Survivor's Lap signaling the beginning of the relay. After dozens of cancer survivors completed their first lap, a Caregiver's Lap was also performed.

Musical entertainment throughout the night was presented by Jessica Heaton, Teresa Wilson, Harlan Cox, Edwin Josey and Friends, Fred and Teresa Wilson, the First United Methodist Church Adult Praise Team, Dennis Gilpin and Blood Brought, Meridian singers.

Events scheduled throughout the night, in addition to good food, included karaoke, dance, prize giveaways and the presentation of team awards and announcement of the grand total estimate.
