Naiad Kuhlman, honorary chairperson for Relay for Life, leads survivors in the first lap of the 2009 Relay for Life. According to planning committee chairperson Villa Edwards, local teams had raised $133,588 toward cancer research, education and prevention. "This community continues to amaze me," she said. "Everyone came together during difficult times, both the weather and the economy, and made this a huge success."
Rebecca Teeple with Crossville Thunder presents Bonnie McDonald with her survivor medal. McDonald said she recently celebrated five years of being cancer free.
Wendell Werner and the House Band provided music for the Relay for Life Teams.
Michael Yarber and Wendell Wilson grill steaks to feed hungry Relay participants. Teams set up tents and offered a variety of food, drinks and treats during the annual event that began at 6 p.m. Friday and concluded at 6 a.m. Saturday.

Cancer can affect people of all ages. This group of area youth participated in Relay for Life in memory of Josh Stephens, who was 17 when he died earlier this year.

Jim Simpson accepts a scholarship on behalf of his daughter Jenny Simpson. The scholarship from the American Cancer Society is provided to a graduating senior who was affected by cancer as a child. Jenny was unable to attend the opening ceremonies Friday.
