Youth Expo kicks off April 14

By Foy and Mildred Sperring / Chronicle contributors

Cumberland Artisans for Creative Expression (CACE) will launch its newest star — the Youth Expo — on Saturday, April 14, at the Community Complex. It will then join its sister star, the fall Artisans Expo, now three years old, which has become an outstanding premier county event. While the Artisans Expo encourages all ages and skills in artistic mediums, the Youth Expo, on its first galactic flight, will focus on Cumberland County youth with no restrictions on age or artistic interests.

Alongside the many youthful displays of talent will be veteran artists and artisans demonstrating and performing, encouraging "hands-on" participation by enthusiastic students — many just beginning in their chosen artistic interest.

The Youth Expo promises to be an exciting cultural event for Cumberland County. At this writing, there are 11 public schools and one private school participating. The Stone Memorial High School Jazz Band (22 students) will perform from 10-10.30 a.m., and other instrumentalists are being contacted to be a part of the all day event.

The Youth Expo encourages and invites participation by students interested in every type of artistic expression, be it visual, fiber, three dimensional and even musical, writing and performing.

"The event will feature visual art displays and performances by Cumberland County students. Students skilled or interested in any art or artisan activity are encouraged to participate through their schools," says CACE President Sharron Eckert.

The purposes of the Youth Expo are to showcase the visual art, music and performance of the youth of Cumberland County and to provide "hands-on experiences" by adult volunteers of various art and craft guilds (spinning, weaving, quilting, drawing painting, dulcimer playing, rug hooking, caning, writing and more). The project is funded by CACE members and sponsors/donors and partially with a grant from the Tennessee Arts Commission, funded by the Tennessee General Assembly. CACE is a 501©3 not-for-profit volunteer organization.

The Youth Expo will be open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. A ribbon-cutting ceremony commences at 10:15 a.m. The Cumberland County Fairgrounds is located on Livingston Road near its intersection with West Avenue (Hwy. 70 N.) in Crossville.

To become involved with this exciting project for the youth of our county, or to become a CACE member, contact Sharron Eckert at 277-5425. To learn more about CACE, visit its Web site at www.cumberlandart.com.
