  • Imagination Library marks three years in Crossville
    Simone O'Dell with the CCHS Jet Theatrix reads If You Give A Mouse A Cookie during the Imagination Library's third anniversary celebration Saturday. The literacy program serves children from birth to age five, providing free, age-appropriate reading material mailed directly to the child's home. Since the program began in May 2005, 41,514 books have been mailed to county children, and 2,122 children have been served.

    The 2008 Relay for Life was held Friday night at the fairgrounds. The theme was "Once upon a time ... there was a cure." Over 120 survivors registered. This year's fundraising goal was $185,000, up from last year's $177,000.

    The community had a chance to view progress on the Downtown Mural Project at a Block Party on Fifth St. Friday. While the weather was chilly, those present enjoyed meeting with the artist, listening to live music and enjoying food and shopping provided by downtown merchants.

    Students, parents and assorted fans were on hand for the first Battle of the Bands at Stone Memorial High School Saturday. Eight aspiring bands and musicians took the stage, hoping they would be named the victor. In the end, it was two brothers and their friends taking the prize, a $100 purse and two hours of recording time at Star Recording Studios.

  • Harlem Ambassadors help raise $7,600 for charity
    The Harlem Ambassadors took on a team of local celebrities Thursday night in a match benefiting the Cumberland County Habitat for Humanity. The event raised $7,669 for the local Habitat for Humanity affiliate, and provided Kay Golliher a chance to shoot a half-court basket during half-time to win $10,000.

    Young Marines were recognized for the awards they had earned during the year. Some of the Awards that were earned were Community Service, Good Conduct, Veterans Appreciation, Attendance, Sportsmanship, Organized Trip and Honor Recruit.

    The annual Parade of Trees is one of Crossville's most enduring holiday traditions, and this year is no different. The trees, decorated by various clubs and service organizations throughout Cumberland County, currently are on display at First National Bank of Tennessee through Dec. 24. There's also a special viewing this Sunday, Dec. 9 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

    Heather Breeden, left, was named photogenic and Miss Congeniality in the Miss Cumberland County division. She is the 16 year old daughter of Larry and Angela Breeden. Kayla Nicole Brady, the 17 year old daughter of Keith and Angela Brady, was named second runner up. Ashley Watts, the 17 year old daughter of Lowell and Billie Jo Watts, was named first runner up, while Alexis Houston, the 16 year old daughter of Keith and Davida McCoy and Tim Houston, was crowned Miss Cumberland County.

    Karen Martin was named Humanitarian of the Year at the Business and Professional Women's Honors and Awards Dinner held Oct. 25 at Forte's in Tansi. "I owe my success to my community," Martin said. Martin began the Cumberland County School Supply Depot five years ago.

  • The Panthers show their spirit
    Stone Memorial High School held its Homecoming celebration last week with the theme "It's Showtime at SMHS." Students competed in spirit competitions, including decorating the lobby, making banners and themed dress-up days. The community got in on the act Tuesday at the fall carnival. Though rain threatened to dampen the fun, everyone enjoyed the event, which raised money for the school library and for club activities.

  • Community walk benefits Avalon Center
    Over a hundred people showed up to participate in the Avalon Walk to Wipe Out Domestic Violence. Women, children, men and even dogs showed up to raise money for the Avalon Center Oct. 8. The walk route, which was approximately three miles, began at the courthouse gazebo that morning.

    The evening began on an extremely hot note and the Cumberland County Fair was in town but none of that deterred a large crowd from attending the Jets versus Panthers contest at CCHS. Both coaching staffs had their squads primed and ready and that feeling spilled over into the crowd. A large and evenly divided crowd saw the Jets of Coach Tony Schultz take the offensive first with junior Lucas Johnson handling the quarterback duties.

    The Cumberland County Fair is in full swing! Carrie Hassler and Hard Rain performed Monday night. Musical entertainment for the remainder of the fair includes Phil Dirt and the Dozers Wednesday at 8 p.m., Fair Idol at 7 p.m. Thursday, Tommy Cash at 8 p.m. Friday, and Ronnie McDowell Saturday at 8 p.m. Kids of all ages enjoy the midway, with Belle City Amusements providing the midway rides.

  • Football teams tuning up for season-opener Thursday
    The annual Cumberland County Elementary football jamboree was played at Stone Memorial High School Saturday evening with four quarters of action. Crab Orchard defeated Pleasant Hill 24-0, Brown blanked North 14-0, Martin defeated Stone 20-6 and Homestead edged South 6-0 in the final seconds of play. The regular season begins Thursday.

  • Relay for Life raises $147,000 before the first lap was walked
    The annual Relay for Life Friday night was a rousing success before the first step was taken. Teams raised $147,000 through a variety of activities prior to Friday night's festivities. Organizers were still adding up final totals but all associated with the annual fundraising event for the American Cancer Society agreed that the event was a grand success.

  • Firefighters save 70 percent of home
    Cumberland County Fire Department was called to 5683 Genesis Rd. for a structure fire Friday morning. According to Jeremy Newcome with the Cumberland County Fire Department, the fire began in the basement of an addition to the house and spread to the second floor and into the attic. Firefighters were able to save about 70 percent of the house from the blaze.

    Cumberland Artisans for Creative Expression (CACE) will launch its newest star — the Youth Expo — on Saturday, April 14, at the Community Complex. It will then join its sister star, the fall Artisans Expo, now three years old, which has become an outstanding premier county event.

    Gray skies gave way to blue as morning dawned Wednesday to a chorus of chainsaws slicing downed trees and the purr of generators keeping household appliances running on the Clarence Blaylock Rd.

    The city of Crossville held its 10th annual Easter Egg Hunt Saturday at Centennial Park. About 300 children, through 8 years of age, participated in the event, which included prizes in each age category.

    The Lady Panthers brought their pressure defense and a large vocal following to Murfreesboro as they tried to extend their first season just a little longer. Early foul trouble to one of the Panther stars and a huge rebounding difference in favor of the Tigerettes were key factors in the Stone loss by a 60-52 margin to the team from Lewisburg.

    Nature played havoc and kept Cumberland County and Crossville firefighters busy on the Plateau Saturday night and Sunday, leaving four condos on Renegade Mountain damaged and destroying a house off Lantana Rd.

    It was an amazing night of basketball Thursday night at Stone Memorial High School, as both the Brown Bears and the Crab Orchard Lady Tigers claimed victories over the South Rebels and Lady Rebels, respectively.

    The Cumberland County elementary tournament opened Saturday at Stone Memorial High School with 10 contests, reducing the field to its eight semifinalists — four boys and four girls teams — for games Thursday, beginning at 4:30 p.m., with the Stone-Crab Orchard girls game.

    Defense was the name of the game for the Cumberland County High School basketball teams on Tuesday night, as they ventured to Clarkrange to round up the Buffaloes, but the hosts would celebrate senior night by posting two victories.

  • Lady Jets freshmen advance from district's first round
    Missy Bargayou pumped in 20 points to lead the Cumberland County High School Lady Jet freshmen to a 73-54 victory over the Loudon Lady Redskins in the first round of district tournament Monday night at CCHS.

  • CCHS and Stone meetings live up to the billing
    This was the night that many had been eagerly anticipating for many days, the two Cumberland County High Schools meeting again on the basketball floor. It was truly brother versus brother and there were also sisters on both sides of the floor; kids that have been teammates, now trying to defeat their friends on the court.

    Oscar Patton pinned Shane Wood with 1:21 left in the first period to give the Cumberland County High School wrestling team a 36-35 come-from-behind win over the Stone Memorial High School Panthers Thursday night.

    "We finally played an entire game. We got the win and (a shot at) a better seed in the district (tournament). We will try to move up from fifth to sixth," said CCHS basketball coach Scott Eggleston, whose team beat Rhea County 71-62 Tuesday night in a District 5AAA match to avenge their earlier 67-37 loss in Evensville.

    The Cumberland County High School basketball teams suffered another double-header setback Friday night, as the two squads were beaten by District 5AAA foe Bradley Central.

  • Martin leads Lady Panthers in overtime victory
    On a night that wasn’t particularly one of the better nights for the Stone Memorial girls, Erica Martin got the hot hand and scored 26 points in a 63-58 win over the Lady Warriors of Christian Academy of Knoxville.
