Charles Phelps

CROSSVILLE — July 28, 1923—Oct. 22, 2012

Charles Phelps, 89, was born July 28, 1923, in Troy, MI, and passed away Oct. 22, 2012, at his home in Crossville.

He enlisted in the Army and was a World War II veteran. Later, he became a powerhouse engineer for Ford Motor Company and retired from there. He also enjoyed riding motorcycles, flying airplanes, sailing and driving his motorboat. All in all, he put family first and spent 74 years with his loving wife.

He is survived by his wife, Maryana Beatty Phelps; daughters, Nancy Spencer and husband, Tom, and Nedra Hamner; grandchildren, Gerald Harms and wife, Kathy, Kimberly Kutchey and husband, Gerald, Jim Reed, and Cathy McCampbell; numerous great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; and special friend of the family, Ed Diaz.

He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Nellie Walsh Phelps, and sister, Helen Riley.

The family sends a special thank you to Caris Healthcare for the understanding and wonderful care they gave Charles, and for being there for the family in the last days.

Crossville Memorial Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc. was in charge of the arrangements.

  • We the People: War drums and propaganda

It’s 4th of July again, a time to remember who we are and how our men and women have offered themselves as sacrifices to the gods of war—for patriotism, for adventure, love of country and concern for families. But we are at a point where we must now ask if more war in the Middle East is honorable or honest. There will always be proud volunteers from Tennessee, but some rethinking is in order.
