CROSSVILLE — March 27, 2014

Dr. William W. Ashley, 90, of Crossville, went to be with the Lord March 27, 2014. A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 5, at Central Baptist Church, 1346 S. Main St. in Crossville. Interment will immediately follow the service.

Born in Chattanooga, he spent his childhood in Tuscumbia, AL, and lived most of his adult life practicing oral and maxillofacial surgery in Miami, FL.

He is survived by his kind and loving wife of 65 years, Frances Givens Ashley; their son, William W. Ashley Jr. of Crossville; daughter, Alice Ashley Patton and husband, Steve, of Williamsburg, VA; grandchildren, William W. Ashley III and Rachel Ashley Watson and husband, Jake; and great-grandson, Jensen Paul Watson.

Possessing an uncommon wit and keen intelligence, he never met a stranger. He was a masterful storyteller and always left one laughing and wanting more of his company. He was a generous philanthropist, devoted University of Alabama fan, avid deep-sea fisherman, golfer and woodworker. He was a superb role model for his children and grandchildren, who loved and admired him greatly. He was the heart of the Ashley family.

he served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II (1943—1945) in North Africa, India and Burma. He was awarded two Bronze Stars for heroism in service. After World War II, he attended Florence State Teachers College then University of Alabama in Birmingham. He was a member of Psi Omega Dental Fraternity; past president of the Miami Dental Society; Florida East Coast Dental Society; South Dade Dental Society; American Dental Society of Anesthesiology; Southeastern Society of Oral Surgeons; American Society of Oral Surgeons and Florida Academy of Dental Practice. He was a diplomat of the American Board of Oral Surgeons. He was also a faculty member of the University of Miami School of Medicine where he served as associate professor of oral surgery. For many years, he volunteered his dental services to the Florida Baptist Children's Home in Miami, FL.

He was most recently a member of Central Baptist Church of Crossville.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Cumberland County or Central Baptist Church Building Fund.

She passed away on July 17, 2014, at the Wharton Homes at Uplands Village in Pleasant Hill. Funeral service will be held Wednesday, July 23, at 11 a.m. at Zion Hill Baptist Church, with Bro. Joe Campbell and Bro. Stanley Campbell officiating. Burial will follow in Burgess Cemetery.
