Oct. 25, 1951—June 15, 2013
Dr. Margaret (Maggie) M. Miller, 61, of Durham, NC, passed away June 15, 2013, at Kaweah Delta Hospital in ViSalia, CA, from complications of cancer, while on a planned adventure to Yosemite. Memorial service was held June 23, 2013, at Pilgrim United Church of Christ in Durham, NC. Maggie was born in Crossville Oct. 25, 1951. She graduated valedictorian of her class from Cumberland High School, and continued on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree, graduating magna cum laude from East Tennessee State University. She later received a Master of Science in Nursing degree at UNC-CH and a doctorate degree in adult and higher education at UNC-Chapel Hill. Maggie's career began as an oncology nurse at Watts Hospital in Durham, NC. She continued on to Duke University Medical Center where she held positions of director of continuing education and assistant director of medical nursing. She was recruited to Milwaukee, WI, as corporate director of nursing education for one of the largest health care systems in Wisconsin. Following the eight years in Wisconsin, Maggie was recruited to the University of North Carolina-School of Nursing as director of continuing education. Maggie retired from UNC-CH in January 2013 after 13 years as assistant dean for operations and strategic initiatives, assistant clinical professor. Maggie lived by the motto "life is good." She enjoyed traveling to places that offered outdoor adventures, cultural experiences, hiking, biking and kayaking. She is remembered for trying to explore the out-of-reach places off the beaten path — the "Miller Trail." She loved a good round of cards, a nightly challenging game of scrabble, "puttering" around the house and spending time with her dogs, especially throwing the red ball countless times for her lab, McKayla. Maggie is survived by her partner of 25 years, Ann Davis of Durham; sisters, Josephine Dulaney of Tennessee and Barbara Ann Ferris of Missouri; brother, Orion Miller of Tennessee; nieces, Katie and Vicky; nephews, Allan, Joe and Andy; and other family, numerous colleagues and amazing friends. Maggie is preceded in death by her father, Orion C. Miller; mother, Sallie L. Dotson; brother, Kenneth R. Miller; and sister, Martha L. Miller. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to the MillerDavis UNC-CH Scholarship and Emergency Funds dedicated to providing financial support for those who otherwise would not be able to attend or complete a nursing education (MillerDavis Fund, C/O School of Nursing Foundation, CB #7460, UNC-CH, Chapel Hill, NC 27599). The family of Dr. Margaret M. Miller wishes to thank the physicians and staff of Duke University Cancer Center and Duke University Medical Center, the faculty and staff of UNC-CH School of Nursing, members of Pilgrim United Church of Christ and the many friends that have provided support and caring over the years. Words to live by, according to Dr. Margaret M. Miller, "Don't pick up drift wood along the way, buy only what you need," "Do not speak unkindly of others," and "Live life to the fullest because 'Life is Good,'" and "Live life so you never have to say 'I wish I would have...'"
