JoAnne Paton

CROSSVILLE — Dec. 26, 1930—July 28, 2013

JoAnne Paton, 82, of Fairfield Glade, passed away July 28, 2013. Her memorial service was held at Fairfield Glade United Methodist Church Aug. 3, conducted by the Rev. Jay Archer and the Rev. Lanita Monroe.

She was a beloved wife of 60 years to Robert Paton and an amazing mother to four sons, Bruce (Elizabeth), Doug (Dottie), Scott (Caron), and Brad (Colleen). She was blessed with nine grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

JoAnne was born Dec. 26, 1930, in Kankakee, IL. She earned her bachelor’s degree in education from Illinois State University in 1952 and later a master’s degree in education from the National College of Education. After getting married in 1952, JoAnne began her nearly 40-year teaching career in Freeport, IL. She taught kindergarten in Pekin, IL, for several years, followed by a move to Peoria, IL, where she opened a private kindergarten. During four years in Bloomington, IN, she became a district manager for World Book Encyclopedia. A move to Naperville, IL ,in 1967 got her back in the kindergarten classroom. Five years, later the family moved to Bettendorf, IA, where she taught pre-first. In 1975, they returned to Naperville, where JoAnne continued teaching kindergarten and second grade until retiring 1992.

Retired life began with a move to Fairfield Glade, where JoAnne liked to joke that she was flunking retirement. She was active in the Resident Homeowners Association, including a term as president. She and Bob were very involved with the Fairfield Glade United Methodist Church. JoAnne served on the church council, was president of the United Methodist Women, and was involved with the creation and development of the church’s columbarium. As the daughter of a florist, JoAnne always loved gardening. She was on the Garden Club board and, when not busy elsewhere, could always be found nurturing her own garden. She was active in P.E.O. for 55 years, serving as chaplain in four chapters. JoAnne loved her Bible study group, bridge groups, book club, playing golf, tennis, bowling, cooking, traveling, entertaining, and most of all, spending time with her family.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Herman and Dorothy (Faber) Stoltz; brothers, Leonard and Gerald Stoltz; and sister, Lorrie Nelson.

Donations can made in her name to the America Cancer Society by accessing her memorial page: http://main.acsevents.org/goto/JoAnnePaton. Memorials can also be made in her name to the Fairfield Glade United Methodist Church, 231 Westchester Dr., Crossville TN 38558.
