Geneva Campbell

July 9, 1944 — Sept. 6, 2007

Geneva (Thompson) Campbell, 63, of Crossville, TN, passed away Thursday, Sept. 6, 2007. Funeral services were held in the chapel of Bilbrey Funeral Home Sunday, Sept. 9, 2007, with Bro. Charles H. Christopher officiating. Burial was in Green Acres Memory Gardens.

She was born July 9, 1944, in DeKalb County, AL, the daughter of Benjamin Franklin Thompson and Ethel (Countryman) Thompson. She was a factory worker and of the Baptist faith.

She is survived by her husband, Jerry Lee Campbell, of Crossville; daughter, Charlotte Findley of Crab Orchard; sons, Daniel Campbell and Samuel Campbell, both of Crossville; brothers, Ellis Thompson of Minnesota and Harold Thompson of Trenton, GA; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Ethel (Countryman) Thompson; father, Banjamin Franklin Thompson; two infant sisters; and brothers, Frank Thompson and Charles Thompson.

Pallbearers were Jim Wyatt, Rex Campbell Jr., Darrell Potter, Jeremy Findley, Nick Findley, Rick Smith, Greg Jones and Tyler Cundus.

Joe Oliver Cox

May 3, 1935 — Sept. 7, 2007

Joe Oliver Cox, 72, of Crossville, TN, passed away Friday, Sept. 7, 2007. funeral services were conducted from the chapel of Bilbrey Funeral Home on Monday, Sept. 10, 2007, with Bro. Scott Johnson officiating. Interment was in Crossville City Cemetery.

He was born May 3, 1935, in Crossville, the son of Lawson and Mae (Hedgecoth) Cox. He was a painting contractor. He married Ellen Hayes Oct. 7, 1961, and was of the Baptist faith.

Mr. Cox is survived by his wife, Ellen Gertrude (Hayes) Cox, of Crossville; daughter and son-in-law, Shirley and Jimmy Haney of Crossville; son and daughter-in-law, Jeff and Dayna Cox of Crossville; grandson, Colby Cox of Crossvillle; three nieces, Glenda, Emma and Jody; and sister-in-law, Mabel Phillips Cox.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Mae (Hedgecoth) Cox; father, Lawson Cox; sisters, Della Cox Meade, Cora Cox and Ruby Cox; brothers, Marshall Cox and Wesley Cox; and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were David Cox, Roy Cox, Roy Blaylock, Bob Bohannon, Gene Elmore and Ross Daves.

Robert Ray Eldridge

Dec. 21, 1919 — Sept. 6, 2007

Robert Ray “Bob” Eldridge, 87, of Crossville, TN, passed away Thursday, Sept. 6, 2007. Furneral services were held in the chapel of Bilbrey Funeral Home Sunday, Sept. 9, 2007, with Bro. Bratton Tucker and Bro. Gary Robbins officiating. Interment was at Pomona Cemetery.

He was born Dec. 21, 1919, in Overton County, TN, the son of Lester Hugh and Elizabeth Gertrude (Robbins) Eldridge. He was retired from Crosssville Rubber Plant and a member of Pomona United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Lola (Caruthers) Eldridge of Crossville; daughter, Phyllis Ann Mullins of Crossville; two grandchildren, Tony and Brian Bullins; three great-grandchildren, Heather, Chris and Daniel Mullins; sisters, Lois White of Ohio, Wilkie (Raymond) Cole, Morean “Moe” (Jerry) Randol and Glinda (Winston) Clouse, all of Crossville; brothers, Paul (Nina) Eldridge of Ohio, Hugh Eldridge and John (Oma) Eldridge of Crossville, Bill Eldridge of Indiana and Mith (Judy) Eldridge of Crossville.

He was preceded in death by his father, Lester Hugh Eldridge; mother, Elizabeth Gertrude (Robbins) Eldridge; son-in-law, Charles Mulllins; sister, Elna Eldridge; brothers, Edd Eldridge and Howard Eldridge; one infant brother; one infant sister; five sisters-in-law, Edith, Libby, Etta and Garaldine Eldridge and Marie Eldridge Wheeler; two nephews, Doyle Eldridge and Winston Clouse Jr.; and niece, Pat Harris.

Pallbearers were Johnny Eldridge, Danny Cole, Daryl Cole, Jerry Clouse, Roger Cole and Ron Moon. Honorary pallbearers were Kenny Eldridge, Eddie Eldridge, Junior Randol, Lester Cole, David Eldridge, Sam Eldridge, Brad Eldridge and Kyle Eldridge.

Mary Ellen Ledbetter

Sept 7, 2007

Mary Ellen Ledbetter, 67, of Crossville, died Friday, Ssept. 7, 2007 at Cumberland Medical Center. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at noon EST at Stevens Mortuary Chapel in Knoxville with Pastor Michael McCoy officiating, interment will follow at Tennessee Veterans Cemetery.

Mrs. Ledbetter was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, David Allen Rutledge and Ellen Annette Watson; and sister, Sara Rutledge.

She is survived by her husband, Jesse Barton Ledbetter; daughter and son-in-law, Allison and Randall McNew; sons & daughters-in-law, Mark and Mary Ledbetter, Jeff and Cary Ledbetter, Joseph and Renee Ledbetter, Richard and Dawn Ledbetter; 10 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; brother and sister-in-law, William and Joy Rutledge; two nephews, David and Debbie Rutledge, Bob and Robyn Rutledge.

Lyle W. Lipke

Feb. 23, 1942 — Sept. 5, 2007

Lyle W. Lipke, 65, of Crossville, TN, passed away Sept. 5, 2007, after a lingering illness. Memorial services were held Saturday at 4 p.m. from the chapel of Hood Funeral Home. Pastor Vern Daugherty and Dr. Joseph Wiles officiated with special music provided by Anna Wiles and Velma Daugherty. Full military honors were given.

He was born Feb. 23, 1942, in Berlin, WI, the son of Ernest David and Norma Bigsby Lipke. He was retired from the U.S. Army, a member of the 82nd Airborne. He served in the Dominican Republic for 18 months, Korea for 13 months and 5 and 1/2 years in Ludwigsburg, West Germany. While in the military, he established the KORUS newspaper in Korea and was chosen by the U.S. Army to cover the release of the POWs being returned from North Vietnam in the Phillipines at the end of the Vietnam War. He was a graduate of Tennessee Technological University and owned and operated The Citizens Press Box paper in Crossville. He was also a member of New Hope Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Georgia Lipke, of Crossville; daugher, Andreae Miles of Nashville, TN; brothers, Ernest David Lipke and Lary Laverne Lipke, both of Wisconsin; and sister, Lorretta Louise Swinehart, also of Wisconsin.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

The family has asked that donations be made to the National Kidney Foundation.

James Richard Martin

April 12, 1927 — Sept. 5, 2007

James Richard Martin, 80, of Fairfield Glade, TN, passed away Sept. 5, 2007. Memorial services were held Sunday, sept. 9, at 3 p.m. at Fairfield Glade United Methodist Church. The Rev. Max Mayo and the Rev. Lanita Pride officiated. Burial was in the church Memorial Gardens.

He was born April 12, 1927, in Rochester, PA, the son of Paul R. and Edna M. Whitmore Martin. He was retired from General Motors fnancial department and was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served in World War II. He was also a member of the Fairfield Glade United Methodist Church. He was a member of the Lions Club, having served as treasurer and served on the CCRC assisted living committee. He will be remembered as a wonderful man who loved his family and firends and one who always had a smile on his face. He enjoyed playing golf and loved to travel.

He is survived by his wife, Rohn Martin, of Fairfield Glade; sons, William Wakefiled Martin and wife, Linda, of Manvel, TX, Charles Wakefield Martin and wife, Paula Thiede, of Tirana, Albania; daughter, Nancy Matula of Atlanta, GA; stepchildren Von Fletcher and husband, Pete, of Ft. Worth, TX, Sue Rogalski and husband, Bob, of Memphis, Jo Stephens and husband, Dave, of Sterling Heights, MI, Debbie Scott of Morgantown, WV, Jane Johnston of Parkersburg, WV, and Matt Blair and wife, Sally, of Knottsville, WV; brother, Bill Martin and wife, Jeanne, of Trenton, OH; sisters, Ruth Anderson and husband, Pete, of Etowak, NC, Lillie Baxa and husband, Frank, of Rochester, PA, Polly Inge of Freedom, PA, Arlene Johns and husband, Jack, of Beaver, PA, and Shirley Radish and husband, Edward, also of Freedom, PA; 17 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Tony David McVey

Sept. 14, 1960 — Aug. 30, 2007

Tony David McVey, 46, of Crossville, TN, passed away Thursday, Aug. 30, 2007.

He was born Sept. 14, 1960, in Richmond, TN, the son of Elige and Sarah (McDaniell) McVey. He was a factory worker and was of the Baptist faith. He served in the United States Navy.

He is survived by sisters, Janet Ketring of Fairfield Glade, TN, and Mary Ann Turner and Milli Welsh of Richmond, IN; and brothers, Michael McVey and Robert McVey of Richmond, IN.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Sarah (McDaniel) McVey; father, Elige McVey, and brother, Jeffrey McVey.

Vickie Morris

1944 — Sept. 8, 2007

On Saturday, Sept. 9, Vickie Ann Crowell went home to be with her Lord after living with cancer for two years and being seriously ill for one month. Visitation was held Monday at 6 p.m. with a funeral service at 7 p.m. at the chapel of Bilbrey Funeral Home. Interment will be in Salisbury, NC, with graveside services in Chestnut Hill Cemetery.

Vickie was born in Salisbury, NC, in 1944, and lived the past 12 years in Crossville. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lennie Gene Morris, and her parents, Arthur Hix and Dorothy Smith Crowell.

She is survied by her brother and sister-in-law, John and Joan Crowell of Crossville, and nephews Jim and Johnny Crowell and her niece, Julie Dillon, all of whom she loved dearly. She is also survived by her four stepdaughters, Angie (Gary) Lingle of Salisbury; Betty Jean (Tim) Lowman of Salisbury; Cindy (Edward) Gordon of Raliegh, NC; and Dawn (Doyle) McCoy of Crossville; and her grandson, Brandon, of Knoxville, whom she raised and loved dearly as a son. Also, seven grandchildren: Brittiny, Parker, Megan, Charlie, Edward (Bud), Amber and Cody. She will be greatly missed by her family, great nieces, great nephews and many friends.

Vickie was employed at the Crossville Chronicle in the circulation department for 12 years. She was very dedicated to her job and cared greatly for her friends at the Chronicle. She attended Tansi Community Church.

Vickie was a graduate of Boyden High School in Salisbury, NC, in 1962.

The family will receive friends at Summersett Funeral in Salisbury at 1 p.m. on Wednesday with the graveside services to follow at 2:30 p.m.

Local services were performed under the direction of Bilbrey Funeral Home, Inc. Memorials may be sent to Hospice of Cumberland County, Crossville, TN.



Bill Parrott

Feb. 21, 1938 — Sept. 9, 2007

Bill Parrott, 69, of Monterey, passed away Sunday, Sept. 9, at his home in Monterey, TN. Funeral services wll be conducted Tuesday, Sept. 11, at 11 a.m. from the chapel of Goff Funeral Home. The Rev. Walt Phillips will officiate with interment following in the Ray Cemetery.

Mr. Parrott was born Feb. 21, 1938, in Monterey, TN, to the late Paul and Pearl Roberson Parrott.

Mr. Parrott was a retired Putnam County Sheriff’s Deputy. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1958 to 1962. He was an emergency medical technician with Monterey Ambulance Service from 1972 to 1976. He was an EMT at Cumberland County Ambulance Service from 1976 to 1979 and 1982 to 1987; a police officer for the city of Monterey from 1987 to 1988; deputy with Putnam County Sheriff’s Department from 1988 until 2005, where he served as chief deputy from 2002 until his retirement.

He is survived by his wife, Charlene Guffey Parrott, of Monterey; one daughter and son-in-law, Dr. Rick and Sara Gibbs of Maryville, TN; two sons and daughters-in-law, Steve and Barbara Parrott of Sevierville, TN, and Bill and Ann Parrott of Watertown, TN; 10 grandchildren, Christian Parrott, Zack Parrott, Cole Parrott, Haley Parrott, Emma Parrott, Collin Russell, Conner Russell, Chase Parrott, Allison Bogle and Ashley Bogle; two great-grandchildren, Raven Mason and Jackson Mason; six brothers and sisters-in-law, Jack and Peggy Parrott of Harriman, TN, Jim and Sue Parrott of Tracy City, TN, Ken and Wanda Parrott, Joe and Betty Parrott, Dan and Glenda Parrott and Bobby and Sharon Parrott, all of Monterey, TN.

Mr. Parrott’s brothers will serve as pallbearers.

Ida “Granny” Sidwell

March 11, 1909 — Sept. 2, 2007

Ida “Granny” Sidwell, 98, of Crossville, passed away Sept. 2, 2007. Funeral services were held Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2007, fromt he chapel of Hood Funeral Home. Pastor Davis Babcock officiated with burial in Green Acres Memory Gardens.

She was born March 11, 1909, in Cumberland County, TN, the daughter of Isaac and Sally Ashburn Barringer. She was a homemaker and a member of Christian Church of the Cumberlands. She liked to crochet and loved making quilts for her family. Her grandchildren will always remember the special times they spent growing up and staying with their granny. All the love and guidance she gave through the years will be treasured in their hearts and lives forever.

She is survived by her daughters, Wilma Wyatt and Clella Quillen and husband, Jack, all of Crossville; grandchildren, Renee Smith and husband, Chris, Beth Davis and husband, Scott, Krista Kemmer and Husband, Danny, Daren Dalton, Gary Smith and wife, Sherri, and Gina Nie and husband, Jim; great-grandchildren, Kylene Miehls, Devin Dalton, Jessica Sexton, Colton Nie, Nykyla Nie, Tanner Smith, Tyler and Bailey Davis, Andrew Smith, Thomas Seth Kemmer and Luke Kemmer; and sister-in-law, Mim Barringer.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Pallbearers were Scott Davis, Chris Smith, Thomas Smith, Gary Smith, Kevin Dalton and Danny Kemmer. the family has asked that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to The Christian Church of the Cumberlands.

Nellie Mae VanWinkle

Nellie Mae (Brewer) VanWinkle, 89, of Crossville, TN, passed away Monday, Sept. 3, 2007. Funeral services were conducted in the chapel of Bilbrey Funeral Home Thursday, Sept. 6, 2007, at 11 a.m. with Bro. Kenneth Cole officiating. Interment was in Akins Cemetery in Crossville.

Mrs. VanWinkle was born Dec. 1, 1917, in Crossville, TN, the daughter of Steve and Susie (Burgess) Brewer. She was a homemaker and a member of Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses.

She is survived by her daughers, Vera Sue Wyatt, Cleo Marie Burgess and Vora Fern Miller, all of Crossville; son, Veral Thomas VanWinkle of Crossvillle; sisters, Dollie Cordell of Crossvillle and Margaret Kirby of Rossville, GA; brother, Everett Brewer of Crossville; seven grandchildren and 10 great-granchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Francis VanWinkle; son, Gerald Mitchell VanWinkle; and brother, Edward “Bud” Darlington Brewer.

Pallbearers were Jonathan Cox, Dale Collins, Allen Collins, Devin Marchuk and Mike DeMarcus.
