Charlene S. Dunford

April 23, 1928 — June 9, 2007

Charlene Smith Dunford, 79, of Jamestown, passed away June 9, 2007 at Cedars Health Care.

Funeral services were conducted June 12 from the chapel of Jennings Funeral Home, with Bro. Leeman Cravens, Bro. Sammie Dunford and Bro. Delmar McCowen officiating. Burial followed in the Fentress Memory Gardens.

Mrs. Dunford was born April 23, 1928, in Jamestown, TN.

She was a licensed practical nurse for 31 years. She was a member of the Jamestown Chapter O.E.S. #373 and a member of Crossville Baptist Church.

Survivors include her daughters and son-in-law, Karolyn and Rick Person of Old Hickory, TN, and Karen Shelby of Jamestown; son and daughter-in-law, Danny and Pam Dunford of Lebanon, TN; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; brother and sister-in-law, Claude and Audrey Smith of Crossville; sister and brother-in-law, Lois and Harold Clayborn of Allardt, TN; brother-in-law, Olin Dunford and wife Doris of Allardt; and a host of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Maurice Dunford; father, Charlie Smith; mother, Lena (Moody) Smith; and sister, Loretta Weltch.

All grandchildren and spouses and great-grandchildren served as pallbearers.

Jennings Funeral Home of Jamestown was in charge of the arrangements.



Jean A. Ely

July 3, 1921 — June 9, 2007

Jean Ailes Ely, 85, of Crossville, passed away June 9, 2007. Memorial services will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, June 23, at the First Congregational Church, on the corner of Lantana and Dorton Rd., with the Rev. Tom Upshaw officiating.

Mrs. Ely was born July 3, 1921, in Canton, OH, the daughter of Curtis and Bessie Weaver Ailes.

She graduated from Ohio State University with a degree in art education and retired from the Kettering School System as an art teacher. During her years in Kettering, sang with the Kettering Sweet Adelines. She was also a member of the First Congregational Church in Crossville. She had many hobbies such as arts, crafts and sewing. She also enjoyed volunteering for the Ft. Wayne Zoo and working with handicapped children. She spent most of her life sharing her talents while teaching art classes. She will be remembered by family and friends as the kind, loving and unselfish lady that she was.

Survivors include her husband, Jack Ely of Crossville; sons and daughters-in-law, Jonathan and Karen Ely of Columbus, OH, Jeffrey and Jenny Ely of Kokomo, IN and Joseph Ely of Cincinnati, OH; daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer and Robbie McGraw of Columbus; grandchildren, Becky Sisk and husband Stuart, Patrick McGraw, Seth Ely and wife Bethany, Jacob Ely and wife Lauren, Anna Ely, Caleb Ely and wife Sarah, Malachi Ely, Katie, Laura and Luca Ely; and three great-grandchildren.

Billy L. Johnson

June 16, 2007

Billy Lynn "Bill" Johnson, 62, of Athens, passed away June 16, 2007. Funeral services will be held at 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 19, from the chapel of Laycock-Hobbs Funeral Home of Athens, with the Rev. H.N. Keys, the Rev. Dewayne Renfro, Greg Cantrell and Sonya King officiating. Interment will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 20, in McMinn Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home prior to the service on Tuesday.

Mr. Johnson was a native of Detroit, MI, the son of the late Hollis Glen and Nellie Mae Maddox Johnson. He was a resident of McMinn County for 30 years and was the manager of Athens Airport. He was an avid flyer and farmer, a member of the Athens Lions Club, having held various offices, and a member of Mt. Verd Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife of 32 years, Barbara "Bobbie" Katherine Loring Johnson of Athens; brother and sister-in-law, Robert "Bob" and Sandra "Sandy" Johnson of Athens; and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Ray Keck, Dane Goin, Cliff Keck, Wayne Goin, Jim Maddox, Jimmy Johnson, Newell Johnson and Zane Cantrell.

Honorary pallbearers will be the Athens Lions Club, airport buddies, Garrett King, Zane Cantrell, Mitchell Bohannon, Foster Bohannon and Mack Russell.

Harold E. Koob

Feb. 23, 1921 — June 13, 2007

Harold Edward Koob, 86, of Crossville, passed away June 13, 2007. Funeral services were held in Seminole, FL.

Mr. Koob was born Feb. 23, 1921, in Hannibal, MO, the son of Henry J. and Daisy (Herring) Koob.

He served in the United States Army and was a veteran of World War II. He moved to Largo, FL, in 1958. He was a jeweler in Indiana before moving to Florida. He became a home builder in Largo and was most recently a real estate broker. He was a founding member of Christ the King Lutheran Church in Largo and has been a member since 1958. He loved camping in North Carolina and golfing.

Survivors include his daughters, Pennie Mooney of Crossville and Linda McPherson of Largo, FL; grandchildren, Julie Valdez of Clearwater, FL, Lori Stone of Largo, FL and Alesha Parton of Crossville; and six great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth (Boltkamp) Koob; daughter, Connie Koob; sister, Helen Lerner; and brother, Joseph Koob.

Norma L. Richards

Nov. 9, 1931 — June 10, 2007

Norma Lee Richards, 75, of Crossville, passed away June 10, 2007. Graveside services were held June 14 at Crossville City Cemetery, with the Rev. Mike Ritzman officiating.

Mrs. Richards was born Nov. 9, 1931, in Putney, WV, the daughter of Booker and Nancy Jane Galyon Stamper.

She was retired from Ford Motor Credit Co., where she worked as an executive secretary. Later years were spent in a beautiful retirement community in Deland, FL, before coming to Crossville. She was an avid reader and liked to bowl. Her grandchildren and her cat were a very important part of her life, as she loved them all so dearly.

Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, Bill and Carol Richards of Northville, MI and David and Glenice Richards of Crossville; daughter, Kimberly Richards and partner Julie Rediker of Houston, TX; brother and sister-in-law, Sparky and Irmel Stamper of Winterhaven, FL; and grandchildren, Holly Hughes, Alison and Jeff Richards, Nathan and Samantha Richards, and Cody and Shelby Hilker.

Lillian A. Stumpf

June 10, 2007

Lillian Anne Stumpf, 72, of Rickman, beloved mother, wife, entrepreneur and passionate lover of life, passed away June 10, 2007. A memorial celebration of her life will be held at a date to be announced.

After traveling around the country as a Navy brat while growing up, Anne married Frank J. O'Brien Jr. in 1952 and had three children by 1956. She was widowed in 1956 at 22 years old and faced the future with three infants and an incomparable will to succeed. Three years later, she married J. Thomas Stumpf, who adopted the children, and had another child.

She started several businesses and leveraged her innate leadership and business acumen as an owner and senior business executive with several companies including Annie's Bookworm, Mighty Maids, Glemby's and Massachusetts Mutual. She moved to Tennessee in 1997 and worked as a general insurance agent and, more recently, for MultiPro Network and ISDN.

Anne sang for several years with Mastersingers, loved all people and animals, especially if they were suffering, and was a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Cookeville. Her intelligence, elegance, talent and compassion distinguished her career as a wife, mother and executive.

Survivors include her children, Skeeter Flowers and Binney Stumpf of Overton County, Daniel M. O'Brien of Libertyville, IL and Chip O'Brien of Silverton, OR; sisters, Carol Bentley and Arlene Earley; grandchildren, Kristen and Kelsey O'Brien, Francis J. O'Brien IV and Zachary D. O'Brien.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Frank J. O'Brien Jr. and Thomas J. Stumpf.

Hilda B. Williams

June 14, 2007

Hilda B. Williams, 74, of Kingston, passed away June 14, 2007, at NHC Nursing Home in Oak Ridge. Funeral services were conducted June 16 from the chapel of Brown Funeral Home of Kingston. Graveside services followed at the Crossville City Cemetery. The Rev. Don Morris and the Rev. Sue Lynn Johnson officiated.

Mrs. Williams had lived in Kingston for 21 years, then moved to Crossville for 22 years before becoming a resident of Kingston again for six months. She enjoyed sewing, quilting and needlework. She also loved to read and was an avid walker. She was a member of the Kingston United Methodist Church and was a very devoted wife of 52 years to her husband, James S. Williams, who preceded her in death five and a half months ago.

Survivors include her daughters, Diane Mount of Kingston and Debra Jean Williams of Knoxville; son, Stephen David Williams (Sandy) of Aiken, SC; sisters, Melva Fuchs of Hollywood, MD and Lounette Clinton of Rancho Cucamonga, CA; and grandchildren, Bonne Mount of Knoxville, Jesse and Ethan Williams and Alex Goodman, all of South Carolina.

Lester C. Williams

Aug. 11, 1938 — June 16, 2007

Lester C. Williams, 68, of Monterey, passed away June 16, 2007. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 23, at the Lawrence Chapel Church of God of Prophecy on Plateau Rd. in Crossville, with the Rev. Todd McDonald and the Rev. Tim Farmer officiating.

Mr. Williams was born Aug. 11, 1938, in Monterey, the son of the late Leonard (Pete) and Nettie Williams.

He was retired from the U.S. Air Force and the U.S. federal government, and was a board member of the Monterey Senior Citizens.

Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Wanda Stephens Williams; children, Lester Williams II, Lisa (DeWayne) Benson of Knoxville and Leslie (Tim) Hunze of Antioch; six grandchildren; brothers, Morris (Margarit) Williams of El Paso, TX and Meredith (Gail) Williams of Monterey; sisters, Drucilla (George) Ray and Connie (Roger) Nichols of Monterey; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Spec. Luke C. Williams who died in Iraqi Freedom, and an infant brother.
