Mary A. Goss

Feb. 3, 1925 — May 12, 2007

Mary Afton (Johnson) Goss, 82, of Pompano Beach, FL, and Crossville, passed away May 12, 2007, as a result of extensive injuries suffered in a car wreck on April 16, 2007. Visitation will be held from 6-9 p.m. Friday, May 18, at Bilbrey Funeral Home. The funeral will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1550 Genesis Rd., followed by burial in Green Acres Memory Gardens.

A member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, she was the beloved wife of the late Jonas Glenn Goss and the cherished mother of Charlotte, Jim and Donna Goss. She will be greatly missed by her daughter-in-law, Ann Cross Goss; grandchildren, Matthew Goss and Mary Ruth Goss Holland; and great-grandchildren, Madeleine Sheldon, Eli Goss and Annalise Holland.

Born in Sparta on Feb. 3, 1925, she was the only child of John Dewey and Cora Lee Hale Johnson, who moved to Crossville as original Homesteaders during Roosevelt's program in the Great Depression. She graduated from Cumberland Homestead High School.

A working mother, she traveled from Crossville and later from Knoxville to Oak Ridge where she worked as a record clerk at the Y-12 Plant of Union Carbide, now Martin Marietta. She was an accomplished quilter and knitter. She loved her family, relatives and friends, flowers, cats and beautiful sunrises over the ocean, or watching the fields and branch from the front porch of her Crossville home.

A breast cancer survivor for 47 years, she helped others in their recovery through the American Cancer Society. She was a volunteer at Cumberland County Hospice. Her sweet, loving faith and compassion will be missed by her family, relatives, friends and cats.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the American Cancer Society or to a Hospice of your choosing.

Kraeer Funeral Home and Cremation Center assisted with preparation in Florida. Bilbrey Funeral Home, Inc. is in charge of local arrangements.
