Conrad R. Benegar

Dec. 7, 1923 — March 25, 2007

Conrad Ray Benegar, of Crossville, passed away March 25, 2007. A memorial service was held March 30 at St. Raphael's Episcopal Church, with the Rev. Ann Markel officiating. Burial was in Knoxville Veterans Cemetery in Knoxville.

Mr. Benegar was born Dec. 7, 1923, in Harrison, AR, the son of Albert Conrad and Bessie Anne (Pettit) Benegar.

He was retired from the United States Navy and was a member of St. Raphael's Episcopal Church.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia (Davis) Benegar of Crossville; daughters, Susan Nixon of Morehead City, NC, Jan Lawrence of Navarre, FL and Judy Benegar of Virginia Beach, VA; sons, John Benegar of Parker, CO, Steven Benegar of Suffolk, VA, Michael Benegar of Marietta, GA and Jeff Benegar of Bealton, VA; sisters, Beth Schroeder of Hailey, ID and Kathi Benegar of Niwat, CO; brother, Roger Benegar of Spokane, WA; stepdaughters, Brenda Michelle Johnson of Columbia, SC and Cheryl Lynn Bowling of Louisville, KY; stepson, Alan Bradley Johnson of Bolingbrook, IL; 15 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Richard Benegar; and sisters, Connie Ann Anders and Alene McDonald.

Bilbrey Funeral Home, Inc. was in charge of the arrangements.



George Johnny Cooper

June 7, 1931 — March 29, 2007

George Johnny Cooper, 74, of Crossville, passed away March 29, 2007. Funeral services were held March 31 from the chapel of Hood Funeral Home, with Bro. Woodrow Forsythe and Bro. Thomas Brady officiating. Burial was in Elmore Cemetery.

Mr. Cooper was born June 7, 1931, in Fentress County, TN, the son of Andrew and Clementine Cooper.

He was retired from Life Care Nursing Home, having worked in housekeeping for many years.

Mr. Cooper was a member of the Mayland Church of God of Prophecy. He loved to coon hunt and enjoyed horseback riding.

He is survived by his wife, Jean Cooper, of Crossville; sons Donnie Cooper and wife, Rosemary, of Cookeville, Jackie Cooper, Mark Cooper and wife, Virginia, all of Crossville, Paul Cooper of Knoxville, Ricky Cooper, Tony Cooper and wife, Sandra, all of Crossville, and Michael Cooper of Knoxville; daughters, Judy Hedgecoth and husband, Donnie, Linda Ward and husband, Jim, Kathy Tabor and husband, Steve, and Monica Hedgecoth, all of Crossville; grandchildren, Alfred, Mary, Chad, Tiffany, Anthony, Matthew, Shawn, Dustin and Dakota Cooper, Amanda Tabor, Melissa Thompson and husband, Jason, Steven Ward and Jennifer and Jessica Hedgecoth; and great-grandchildren, Paige, Kyla, Hunter and Shania Cooper, Payton Miller, Austin Ward and Jacob Thompson.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Cooper was preceded in death by son Stevie Cooper, grandson Justin Cooper, brothers Raymond, Alfred and Winford Cooper and sisters Lena Keyes and Yuna Findley.

Pallbearers were Steven Ward, Matthew Cooper, Anthony Cooper, Alfred Cooper, Dakota Cooper, Dustin Cooper, Shawn Cooper and Jason Thompson.

Dorman O'Neal Elmore Sr.

March 20, 1939 — March 31, 2007

Dorman O'Neal Elmore Sr., 68, of Crossville, passed away March 31, 2007. Funeral services were conducted April 3 from the chapel of Hood Funeral Home. Bro. Ralph Reagan officiated with burial following in Linary Cemetery.

Mr. Elmore was born March 20, 1939, in Campbell County, KY, the son Ramey Washington and Minnie Ruth Patton Elmore.

He was a retired construction laborer. He enjoyed fishing and hunting and loved his grandchildren and great-grandchildren very much.

He is survived by his wife, Frances Elmore, of Crossville; sons James Elmore and wife, April, of Jamestown, TN, and Dorman Elmore Jr. of West Tennessee; daughters Darlene Wright of Crossville and Donna Creswell and husband, David, of Crossville; brothers Lester H. Elmore of Petros, TN, and Haskell Elmore of Alabama; grandchildren, Angel, Ashley and Michael Creswell, Kayla Elmore and Katlin Cross; and great-grandchildren, Samuel and Jackie Creswell.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers Willis, Billy, Arthur, Bethel, Cleo, William and Carlie Elmore and sister Vernie Elmore.

Pallbearers were Carlie Elmore, Mack Elmore, David Creswell, Tracy Akins, Randall Keys and Kurt Scarbrough.

Robert W. Hood

Nov. 10, 1925 — March 15, 2007

Robert W. "Jack" Hood, 81, of Crossville, passed away March 15, 2007. Funeral services were conducted March 18 from the chapel of Hood Funeral Home, with the Rev. George Wallace, the Rev. Tim Farmer and Deacon Joe Solis officiating. Special music was by Donna Smith, Deloy and Sybil Brown and Marshal Pugh. Burial was in Green Acres Memory Gardens, with full military honors given.

Mr. Hood was born Nov. 10, 1925, in Cumberland County, the son of Albert Nelson and Dovie Lou Whited Hood.

He was retired from the Cumberland County Schools Transportation Department and was a member of Lawrence Chapel Church of God of Prophecy. He was also a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran, having served during World War II.

After retirement, Mr. Hood worked as a funeral assistant alongside his son at Hood Funeral Home. He loved people and everyone who knew Jack loved him. He was big-hearted and would lend a helping hand to anyone in need. His quick humor and contagious laugh will always be remembered and held dear in our hearts.

Jack loved to work in his garden and take care of his livestock. Some of the biggest and best vegetables were grown in Jack's garden and if you stayed long enough, you would be fed some of the greatest home cooking you ever tasted. He loved to fish and the catch was guaranteed to be the best fish and hushpuppies you ever ate.

The love between Jack and his family was overflowing. They loved together, hurt together, cried together and laughed together. Most importantly, they worshiped the Lord together. For 81 years, he worked hard, gave much and asked for little.

Survivors include his wife, Dean Hood of Crossville; son and daughter-in-law, Garry W. and Deborah Hood of Crossville; granddaughter, Samantha Hood Williams and husband Michael; great-grandchildren, Madison Brooke Hood Williams and Jackson "Little Jack" Cade Hood Williams, all of Crossville; stepson, James Crabtree; stepdaughter, Sherry Russell and husband Wade, all of Crossville; step-grandchildren, Trey and Logan Crabtree and Michelle and John Russell; and step-great-grandchild, Summer Crabtree.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Rose Marie Cox Hood; brothers, Prentis, Elmer, Stanley, Fred and Bert Hood; and sisters, Velma Evans, Maggie Smith, Reba Evans, Minnie Hood and Lillie Houston.

Pallbearers were John Hood, Roger Hood, Billy Birge, Eddie Cox, Jackie Cox, Edgar Cox, Bruce Wyatt, Jimmy McDonald, Vince Tabor, Greg Tabor and Donnie Tabor.

Daniel MacLeod

Nov. 9, 1940 — March 30, 2007

Daniel Edward MacLeod, 66, of Crossville, passed away March 30, 2007. Funeral serves were held at Lasher Funeral Home in Woodstock, NY.

Mr. MacLeod was born Nov. 9, 1940, in Schenectady, NY, the son of the late Delmer B. and Olive (Johnson) MacLeod.

After completing military reserve service and a college education at Hudson Valley Technical Institute, he enjoyed a successful career in the electric utility industry, living and working many places in and out of the United States. He was an avid outdoorsman, a talented artist and enjoyed spending time with his family. He worked for Tristate GNT in Denver, CO, from 1975 to 1988 and Cajun Electric in Baton Rouge, LA, from 1988 to 2000.

He is survived by his wife of 47 and 1/2 years, Gwendolyn Ann MacLeod, of Crossville; daughter and son-in-law Melissa and Gerry Miller of Bennington, VT; son and daughter-in-law Christopher Daniel and Kim MacLeod of Midland, TX; son and daughter-in-law Michael David and Sandra MacLeod of Ouray, CO; brother Ronald MacLeod of Schenectady, NY; brother and sister-in-law Dale and Lola MacLeod of Florida; seven grandchildren, Kate, Emma, Graeme, James, Pearce and Dan; and many beloved nieces, nephews and cousins.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to be made to the Purpose of Patient Comforts for the treatment rooms of Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center, attn: Gift Process, V.U. Station 357727, Nashville, TN 37235-7727.

Mary Frances Miller

Sept. 19, 1931 — April 1, 2007

Mary Frances Miller, 75, of Crossville, passed away April 1, 2007 at Cumberland Medical Center. Funeral services were conducted April 4 from the chapel of Crossville Memorial Funeral Home with pastors Paul Phipps and Larry Long officiating. Special music was provided by Vicki Aslinger. Burial was in Crossville City Cemetery.

Mrs. Miller was born Sept. 19, 1931 in Bledsoe County, TN. She was a homemaker and a member of Alloway Baptist Church. She enjyed gardening, needlepoint and spending time with family and friends.

She is survived by her husband, Luther Miller, of Crossville; daughter Kay Goss and husband, Terry Lynn, of Crossville; step-daughter, Anita Leenerds and husband, Bob, of Taylorsville, NC; grandchildren Barbara Michelle Hassler, Atina Leenerds, Nicki Leenerds and Steve Parrott of Sevierville; and sisters, Dorothy Barnes, Anna Grace Marlow and Jewel Harris.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Ervin Alonzo Norris and Bessie Mae Barnwell Norris; brothers Chester, Charlie and Junior Alonzo Norris; and sister Christine Kilby.

Pallbearers were David Long, Larry Long, John Prince, George Canova, Dale Robbins and Donald Beaty.

Crossville Memorial Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc. was in charge of the arrangements.
